This guy was pretty cool, sitting there minding his own business, and I just had to get the shot. But as I lifted the camera and looked through the lens he just broke into this mean stare into the lens like he was gonna hurt me. I saw it and quickly pressed the shutter. Later I complimented him on his tattoos and showed him the shot and it was then that his frown turned into a broad grin…phew!

I love photographing in bad weather, there is just something about the drama of it all that amazes me, and this was of no exception. Garden of the Gods outside of Colorado Springs is the location, a place which, is simply magical and unlike anywhere else on Earth…the light here is the best I have ever seen, and even when there is none, it still holds it own. Captured this past early spring, where at the higher elevations the clouds brought snow, but where I was at, it was rain. Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado…..and how I love shooting up there when the winter weather begins to roll on in…the wind is bad, the air—-freezing cold, but the images that one can capture are filled with atmosphere and drama, case in point, this shot here. FIRST TIME PUBLISHED / When I looked outside my restaurant in Broome I saw two cowboyheads sitting on the tables outside and I had a strong urge to make some photo’s. I spook to the two men they where from Fitzroy Crossing. They where watching a crowd of Indeginous Aboriginal men and women ‘hanging’ outside in the Plaza. They where waiting for the local liquorshop to open, In Fitzroy is now a ‘ban’ on alcohol, they told me, so Fitzroy Crossing is now a ‘dry’ Community Miss. / Broome, Western Australia. / Today I received an email stating; CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR IMAGE ‘TYPAN’ is one of 55 images from the PEOPLE & PLANET International Photo Competition. to be published in the 2009 People&Planet; Social Justice & Enviroment Diary, which will be published this month in Australia (2009). / We thought that your image was incredible, and it won from a pool of OVER 1000 images from 316 photographers from around the World! / All funds raised by the People&Planet diary go to Australia’s small non profit organisations which are working to promote social-justice and environmental substainability around the world. /

A Stormy Autumn Colorado’s Longs Peak shrouded in Autumn thunderstorm clouds, stands towering above the quaking Aspen below. This scene was really something to see….the atmosphere was just to die for. The way the contrast played out with the yellow and gold Aspens against that dark sky was astonishing, the light was really changing fast so I had to be fairly quick while shooting this. Autumn Travels Shot in Alluvial Fan area of Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado What a scene that just glowed…and I mean GLOWED. It made your jaw just drop open. I am fortunate in that no one else was there, and was lucky to be able to take about 100 shots of this scene alone, playing with composition and such, and custom white balance settings, and in this one, something similar to a sunset setting was used. The Aspen Stand This shot got some really good feedback over on FredMiranda.com so I thought that I would go ahead and share it with you all here as well. Photographed in Rocky Mountain National Park, this is the type of Fall Aspen shot I have wanted, but for some reason, whenever I have shot these kinds of shots in the past, they just never really have come out. Well, I think it did this time. It is almost to much of an iconic Colorado in Autumn photo, but I think one thing makes this one stand out from others. The lines. If you notice the black areas of the bark on the Aspen, that is actually where the Elk have eaten away at the bark. However, I like how it creates the line from left to right, going up higher as it goes to the right. I didn’t even notice this until I was processing the shot, and I suppose you can blame that on negative space. I suppose you can say that I am happy with the shot, I finally got the Autumn image I have always wanted. For those of you who don’t know how beautiful the Colorado Aspen’s are in Autumn, just ask Judy, she will be glad to tell ya! Let me know what ya think! / —-John

Captured 12/13/2008 on a very frigid morning at Cherry Creek State Park, here in Colorado, I froze my damn keester off because I was dense and forgot to bring along my damn jacket! It was an incredible sunrise folks, one which I won’t forget, the colors changed and developed by the minute, going from the cool blues to the warm pinks, reds, and oranges…and I was able to get something in the shots which I had never had been able to before, the lake actually shimmering! In some of the other shots in days to come, you can really see this, and you kind of can here in the bottom left side a tad, an odd occurrence, and one I finally managed to snag! Long exposure, using my Singh-Ray CPL and Marumi ND4, on my Minolta 18-70 DT Lens, I hope ya all like it, let me know what ya think! / —-John !

A New Years Sunrise While not a sunrise in the traditional sense of the word, but it sure seemed to be with the sun hiding behind the clouds, back lighting and glowing everything around me in a colorful haze in Moraine Park inside Rocky Mountain National Park. It was nothing but stunning! Quite the way to start and kick off the New Years I think! Processed in Photomatix HDR with 3 RAW files, then output through PSP 10, , shot on my 5D and Minolta 18-200 DT using a Singh-Ray CPL, and then hiding behind the car to shield myself from 80 MPH wind gusts lol The crazy thing is, the haze in the background, is actually from the snow that was falling and whipping around. I always wanted a “classic” kind of Elk shot, where one can see the steam coming out of their nose and mouth after the Bugle, with snow falling and such, and I think I finally was able to get it !
