I photographed this Seagull atop these fishing nets on the wharf. This Seagull was so regally posed as if he was Poseidon himself. / / Visit my website On The Rock Photography / / / /

4.5×7 inches, watercolour and gouache, 2008. Poseidon was the God of the sea, earthquakes and horses. He was a virile God, fathering many children. He was also moody and could be difficult, causing storms and earthquakes, wrecking ships and drowning men.
AMPHITRITE was the goddess queen of the sea, the wife of King Poseidon. Some say she was one of the fifty Nereides, others an Okeanis, but most simply describe her as the female personification of the sea: the loud-moaning mother of fish, seals and dolphins. As such she was essentially the same as Thalassa. When Poseidon first sought Amphitrite’s hand in marriage, she fled his advances, and hid herself away near Atlas in the Ocean stream at the far ends of the earth. The dolphin-god Delphin eventually tracked her down and persuaded her to return to wed the sea-king. Artwork: Me Original image by the Very Talented Barssel Model the Beautiful TextureoftheSin

The little seahorses were quite surprised by the King’s visit.

Best Viewed Large Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion .. about an hour’s drive from Athens, Greece. “The temple of Poseidon was constructed in approx. 440 B.C. It is perched above the sea at a height of almost 60 m. The design of the temple is a typical hexastyle i.e. it had a front portico with 6 columns. / As with all Greek temples, the Poseidon building was rectangular, with a colonnade on all four sides. The total number of original columns was 42: 18 columns still stand today. The columns are of the Doric Order. They were made of locally-quarried white marble. They were 6.10 m (20 ft) high, with a diameter of 1 m (3.1 ft) at the base and 79cm (31 inches) at the top. / At the centre of the temple colonnade would have been the hall of worship (naos), a windowless rectangular room. It would have contained, at one end facing the entrance, the cult image, a colossal, ceiling – height (6m) bronze statue of Poseidon. Probably gold-leafed, it may have resembled a contemporary representation of the god, appropriately found in a shipwreck, shown in the figure above. Poseidon was usually portrayed carrying a trident, the weapon he supposedly used to stir up storms.” ... the above abridged from Wikipedia. I took this image with my little Olympus C5000 zoom in August of 2005. A bit of Photoshop work has taken place … cloning out tourists, adding a new sky and a texture layer among others. Ποσειδῶν: I begin to sing about Poseidon, the great god, mover of the earth and fruitless sea, god of the deep who is also lord of Helikon and wide Aigai. O Ennosigaios (Shaker of the Earth), to be a tamer of horses and a saviour of ships! Hail Poseidon Gaienokhos (Holder of the Earth), dark-haired lord! O blessed one, be kindly in heart and help those who voyage in ships! / Homeric Hymn 22 to Poseidon More Olympians / / / / Photo reference by Tigg-stock

Here is something I have never done before, used photos from istock (water) and the public domain (Poseidon & Sounion Temple) to create an image I wanted. I wanted to make this as a base for another work, so before it turns into Atlantis, here’s Poseidon’s Temple.
