HMS Warrior is a nineteenth century ironclad. She’s a beautiful vessel moored permanently within the Historic Dockyard at Portsmouth. I pass her every day on the way into work and she never fails to give me a little lift. When I was coming home and the sunset was looking so gorgeous, I couldn’t resist missing my ferry home for this shot!
This is one of my first attempts at tints and post-processing. It’s still one of my favourite images.
This was taken at Cumberland House, Portsmouth,Hampshire, they have a small butterfly house. How about a framed print / or a gorgeous card
I watched the sunrise which was beautiful and then the storm clouds rolled in and gave the Tower a dramatic look.
During the second world war Portsmouth was extensively bombed, much of the old city that had developed over the thousand years of its existence were obliterated. One part that remains is Spice Island with the buildings huddling together on a tiny spit of land. It has been rebuilt part old and part new, but it still remains a busy crowded area dripping with history.
Out walking the dog on the salt marshes, spotted this little post at the edge of the field. Apparently the devil is in the detail. I hope you agree with me that there is also some beauty in the detail too.
Taken from ‘The Portsmouth that has passed’ by William G Gates: Charles II married his Portugese bride Catherine of Braganza here in 1662. Two centuries of decline and disrepair followed until the chapel was restored in 1867 to become the Garrison Church. It was reduced to a burnt out shell during one of Portsmouth’s worst second World War air raids on January 11th 1941 it stands today as a silent memorial.’ War is not just a thing that affects the soldiers.

This was a very dull original file, but being digital you can play at being God … so I turned on the street lights, plus a couple of lights in the houses and played with the atmosphere. If only a clipper ship was sailing in …

In a quiet corner of Portsmouth sits a small museum to the men and machines of the Royal Navy Submarine Service. Part of the Museum is an A-class Diesel electric submarine. It missed active service in WW2 but got to star in a James Bond movie! I worked on submarines, words cannot describe the smell and taste, a mix of diesel oil, salt water and 100 men living without enough water to wash properly. Let alone the cramped living conditions. I was once told (so it must be true) that there are only two ‘jobs’ worse than being a submariner, they were, tramp and prostitute. it’s not a ship, its a boat.
