  • Dear Bill, I can’t begin to tell you how pleased I was to hear that all the harassment finally paid off, and you’ve decided to drag your sorry arse over here! I realise that the prospect of spending months at sea isn’t a pleasant one, but believe me you will forget any hardship you ever had to endure the very second you set foot in this glorious land of goodness and beauty. As I write, the sky above me is suffused with warmth and every colour imaginable and my mind looks eagerly forward to a restful sleep and another day’s sport. Think of it Bill, it’ll be just like the old days..you and I side by side, brothers in arms once again, only this time, there’ll be no bugger firing back at us. Speaking of sport old friend, I’m reminded by The Dear One to inform you that her young cousin Madeline has also written, telling of her intention to take to the water and sample life here at the camp. It appears (would you believe?), that she is expected to arrive shortly after your good self, so may I suggest you pack your finest attire along with your ammo and with any luck, in amongst the quarry, you may just find that you bagged yourself a particularly beautiful specimen! Yours with deep respect and great affection Archie

  • The King Vulture Portrait…... Please view this bird larger he is stunning ! ... (-: The King Vulture, is a large Central and South American bird in the New World vulture family Cathartidae. This vulture lives predominantly in tropical lowland forests stretching from southern Mexico to northern Argentina. The adult King Vulture is the most strikingly colored of the New World Vultures. King Vultures have lived up to 30 years in captivity, though their lifespan in the wild is unknown. This vulture uses urohydrosis, defecating on its legs, in order to lower its body temperature. Despite its bill and large size, it is relatively unaggressive at a kill and will normally back down rather than fight. The King Vulture lacks a voice box, though it can make low croaking noises and wheezing sounds. Its only natural predators are snakes, which will prey upon the vulture’s eggs and young, and large cats such as jaguars, which may surprise and kill an adult vulture at a carcass. The King Vulture feeds solely on carrion and, unlike some New World Vultures, is not known to kill sick or dying animals for food.It often eats stranded fish along river banks, but does not come to village refuse dumps for food.Though it has keen eyesight which can help it locate food. There is evidence that suggests a decline in population, though it is not significant enough to cause it to be listed. This decline is due primarily to habitat destruction and poaching.

  • I decided to take a day off from work and hit my fox location – I figured it would be less busy on a weekday, and the foxes might be more relaxed. Pock was out early, and he was all over the place, trotting here and there in search of breakfast. He’d trot down one trail, and a few minutes later, trot down another trail from a different direction. He didn’t mind passing close by me, he just would sit still for a photo. This vixen, the alpha female, on the other hand, was more than willing to pose for me. She perched on top of a little rise, facing east, with some lovely directional morning sun lighting her up – I don’t think I could have had better light if I had her in a studio. We tried several poses, but settled on this one as our favorite. Near the end of our portrait sitting, I noticed one of the big coyotes down the trail. he noticed the fox, but I don’t think he saw me until I walked from around the tripod – once he saw me, he took off, and the fox ducked into one of the pipe openings they use as a den. This is the new mom – at least as far as I can tell. The beta (maybe now the new alpha) was feeding her on Sunday, and her tummy does look distended and a little red. I’ll post more as the situation develops. Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes) / Wheat Ridge, CO / Sony a700 / Sigma 300mm f/2.8 / Giottos tripod, Acratech ballhead, Wimberley Sidekick ISO200, 1/400sec, f/5

  • click feature buttons to view group/challenge / — / Koalas are at home at Cape Otway and as you drive in to, and out of, the lighthouse grounds there are many koalas in trees…and on the road! I snapped this mother carrying her baby after we nearly ran over them when we pulled over so I could get out and take shots of koalas in trees! I hadn’t seen koalas in the wild since I was a kid, so I was so excited…that I forgot to pay attention to framing or depth of field or anything technical (hence the massive crop…). The koalas along this stretch of road must be used to stopping traffic because after this shot was taken, she crossed the road, stopped in the middle of the road, posed (yes, posed, like in this picture!) for a few photos before running into the scrub. So, this was part of our road trip from Melbourne to Darwin via the Great Ocean Road and the red centre. This was about the seventh day I had my new DSLR (Nikon D90 – Tamron 17-50mm 2.8). UPDATED PIC: have adjusted the levels for sharper image. — / Other images taken in the Cape Otway Grounds / Click images to view / - / N.B. • Otters have long, slim bodies and relatively short limbs, with webbed paws. Most have sharp claws on their feet, and all have long muscular tails. They have a very soft underfur which is protected by their outer layer of long guard hair. This traps a layer of air, and keeps them dry and warm under water. Most otters have fish as the primary item in their diet, supplemented by frogs, crayfish and crabs. Some are expert at opening shellfish, and others will take any available small mammals or birds. Otters are playful animals, for example sliding repeatedly down snowy slopes, apparently from sheer enjoyment. Click on Magazines above ! I will donate 100% of proceeds from the sales of this image to the: “WSPA” “Otter-ly cute ! .........” was featured in Top Shelf Wildlife & Nature” group …

  • oil on canvas. size 36’ X 48”

  • Western green mamba (Dendroaspis viridis). West Africa. / Closely related to the Eastern green mamba and the Black mamba. Although it has a similar, dangerously neurotoxic venom as the black mamba, it is not as potent and injects smaller quantities. It is also not as nervous as its cousin. Found mainly in trees but does sometimes venture to the ground to bask or chase its prey.
