This was a spontaneous shot taken at a local Adelaide cafe on Rundle Street East in Kent Town one day when I was out with Dan. It was included in the series ‘When He’s Away’ and was a part of the ‘Living Queer in Adelaide’ group exhibition for the 2006 Feast Arts Festival there (Exibited at the Town Hall) I really like this one – human body against unyielding cement wall and rigid geometric lines. The theme that I was working on with the shots in this series was an analysis and exploration of sexuality – but more specifically gay male sexuality and the universal themes relating to the divide between public and private, acceptibility and unacceptibility, connection and disconnection, and of course human vulnerability / sensitivity and the structures and systems which confine or limit this. This image is the 1st in a series of 3….. My inspiration behind this are all the lovely wedding images that I see; full of hope, happiness and love, but as we all know the divorce rate is very high and unfortunately many of the beautiful and happy couples divorce… It makes me wonder how would these couples feel if they knew that a few years down the road and a couple of children later, their union would end in divorce. These are the emotions I have tried to capture and portray in my series. And I would like to add a huge thank you to my model and best friend who was also my inspiration as she too recently divorced but was still brave enough to get back into her beautiful wedding dress for this shoot.

It’s happened before…

I was watching a particularly grotesque horror film last night, called ‘Inside’ and the main character was such a frowny face even before she was being attacked by some crazy woman that wanted her unborn child. So I started doodling while I watched it. This is the result. It’s not a direct likeness of the girl, but it’s similar. In case you can’t tell, I love fringes.

/ framed print (walnut frame with off white matt) I used a lot of media in this painting….. / chalk pastels, faber castelle black markers, charcoal, aquarelle watercolour crayons wet and dry, acrylics….on Canson canvas textured paper A2 size / it has been tweaked in photoshop to add brightness and contrast, etc. It’s from a series i’ve been wanting to get a start on for over a year, so this is the first one in the “Mothers and Daughters series”....I’m not sure if i’ll do more or not yet…i hope to….just has to be when the inspiration comes though…. I worked on this til 4am this morning …. oops! I hope you like it anyway, there is a sombre mood about it I guess, but not necessarily dark or negative….tears are healing, they really are….....
