The main threats to this bird are loss of habitat and excessive predation by the introduced predators, namely cats and foxes. It has been suggested that drought and bushfires may also be exacerbating the impacts of other threatening processes.

Denali Nat’l Park, Ak We noticed a car parked along the side of the road as we drove in a few miles from the entrance. Several people had stopped to take photos of this little porcupine. I got out and started taking pictures, that is, until he turned his back on me. Afraid he might have started to feel threatened I quickly decided I’d taken enough pictures…☺ / I had never seen one of these up close…he was cute. This was taken at night around 11 pm….I love the long daylight hours in Alaska! © Dyle Warren 2009
We found this little guy on Christmas Eve, west of Choteau, Montana. A ground blizzard was on, and he was facing into the wind, to keep the snow from packing tight to his quills, when we came along. Of course I had to attempt to get a photo of him, so he turned his side to the wind trying to escape my camera. I took a few photos of him, then we moved on. It was 40 below zero wind chill, my fingers were frozen to the camera in a short time. But the picture was worth it. Featured in Top Shelf Wildlife & Nature Art! / Thank you!
Came across this porcupine on my walk in the Lethbridge coulees this evening—what a cute face! He was a little uncertain about my company so I didn’t get too close….......... Thanks so much for stopping by—my other work can be seen by theme here….......

As cute as they are, porcupines are also ruthless on trees, gnawing the bark, girdling the tree, and killing it. This one is working on a serviceberry shrub. Canon 40D, f6.3, 1/250, focal length 365mm, Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Featured in High Desert Life, August 2009 – thanks so much!

A porcupine I spotted down at Sikome Lake in Fish Creek Park in Calgary. This guy was just chillin about six feet off the ground in a small pine tree. He let me get very close and pretty much just ignored me. He was backlit against the sun so he was pretty hard to miss. / Taken Dec 6 Until a couple of months ago, I had never seen one of these in the wild, now I’ve seen four. Camera: Nikon D80 / Exposure: 1/320 sec / Aperture: f/5.0 / Focal Length: 300 mm / ISO Speed: 200 / Exposure Bias: -1 EV
