A planned get-together with a mate fell through. So instead my son and I went to North Narrabeen beach and took advantage of some magical light and conditions to capture the coast during winter time. / For a very long time this image was my favourite. I was just amazed at how much light was absorbed by the wooden planks, contrast that with the smooth silky water. This morning was a gorgeous morning to be up and about…. 5AM and I was wondering the rocks of North Narrabeen in just a T-shirt. Not a cloud in the sky, not a puff of wind, hardly a swell in sight. Not the best conditions for seascape photography, but a lovely morning to be up and about enjoying the Spring weather. Did manage to take this photo of North Narrabeen Rock Pool. Love the old textured planks around the pool.

I bought some Singh Ray filters mid November. I did not get a chance to try them out until after Xmas – says a lot about the mad rush leading up to this period of the year. I often get questions about the pump house and the diving blocks at Merewether Beach so I found out a bit of info….. 1935 / At a cost of 2,600 pounds, Merewether Ocean Baths, acclaimed as the ‘largest of their kind in the State’ opened as part of the Merewether Golden Jubilee celebrations in November. There was a procession in fancy dress from the Council chambers to the baths. Considered ‘the greatest advertisement for Merewether as a residential suburb’, the new baths had been built further seaward and a little to the south of the older Merewether baths on the same rock platform. At 110 yards by 90 yards, they were ‘big enough to hold the larger swimming events’ and separated into a main pool and a children’s pool by a wide promenade. The main pool nearest the sea was 110 yards long and 55 yards wide, while the shore portion was 110 yards long and 35 yards wide. The 3,500 pounds for relief work on the baths had been paid by the NSW government. Excavation of the baths promised to yield 6,000 to 7,000 cubic yards of stone valued at 2,500 pounds. Merewether Council was seeking a further government loan to cover the construction of dressing-sheds at the baths. The new baths became central to the life of the community and prompted more people from the Lower Hunter district to visit Merewether. It was a cold day and the tide was far out meaning that parts of the beach that are usually cut off by the tide were accessable and I could walk a mile or so along the beach from the car park to reach this spot.

These are the oldest baths in NSW. About 1820, a natural pool was enlarged by convicts or soldiers, on the orders of Major James Thomas Morisset, Commandant of the Newcastle settlement from 1819 to 1822. Its original size is estimated as 15 feet long, seven feet wide and six feet deep. Initially reserved for military use, these baths apparently served for a time as Morisset’s private bathing place and were for many years known as the Commandant’s Bath.

Rota Island is a natural playground with around 3000 inhabitants and is known by many to be Micronesia’s best-kept secret / Rota (Chamoru: Luta) also known as the “peaceful island”, is the southernmost island of the United States Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) and the second southernmost of the Marianas Archipelago. It lies approximately 40 miles north-northeast of the United States territory of Guam. Songsong village is the largest and most populated followed by Sinapalo village (Sinapalu). In 1521, the first European to see Rota, was the lookout on Magellan’s ship Victoria, Lope Navarro. However, Magellan’s Armada of three ships didn’t stop until they reached Guam, so the first European to arrive in Rota (in 1524), was Spanish navigator Juan Sebastian Elcano, who annexed it together with the rest of the Marianas Archipelago on behalf of the Crown of Spain. Going to do a series of the Noosa National Park in Queensland. This place is totally beautiful, and so natural! The park is loaded with hiking tracks, with some unmarked and quite rugged. I can’t think of anything better than being alone and at one with nature in it’s purest form. This rock pool, not easily accessable as it took about 20 minutes of rock jumping and some climbing. I find the best places are where no one can easily access :) Noosa National Park, Noosa Heads, Queensland, Australia. Canon 50D, 10mm. Available Large and best viewed Large!
