This image was taken before dawn down at North Narrabeen Rock Pool. This is one of the largest rock pools in Australia. This image was a 3 minute exposure which captures a lovely blurring of the clouds. The interesting colours of the water are due to overhead lighting on the pool. This is a very simple but peaceful image. For those that want to find out how I produced this, I described my processing in detail in one of my blog posts You can read it here

Sydney is not only blessed by a beautiful coastline providing us with countless beaches, but also some of these beaches have a “rock pool” at the headland. These rock pools provide a great place for the locals to take a dip in the ocean without the waves. This morning was a gorgeous morning to be up and about…. 5AM and I was wondering the rocks of North Narrabeen in just a T-shirt. Not a cloud in the sky, not a puff of wind, hardly a swell in sight. Not the best conditions for seascape photography, but a lovely morning to be up and about enjoying the Spring weather. Did manage to take this photo of North Narrabeen Rock Pool. Love the old textured planks around the pool.

It was a cold day and the tide was far out meaning that parts of the beach that are usually cut off by the tide were accessable and I could walk a mile or so along the beach from the car park to reach this spot.

These are the oldest baths in NSW. About 1820, a natural pool was enlarged by convicts or soldiers, on the orders of Major James Thomas Morisset, Commandant of the Newcastle settlement from 1819 to 1822. Its original size is estimated as 15 feet long, seven feet wide and six feet deep. Initially reserved for military use, these baths apparently served for a time as Morisset’s private bathing place and were for many years known as the Commandant’s Bath.

Went out this morning to shoot Mona Vale pool. It was a very high tide (1.7m). Braved the waves to get some interesting shots of the water crashing over the pool. Very little Photoshop on this image (just a few curves and levels), other than that, this was how it came off the camera.

This was a crack of dawn shot on the North coast of Cornwall. I spent most of the time keeping warm in the car and in the dark. But it was worth the wait. Mowenstow, Bude. Cornwall, England.

I was standing in the middle of the on coming wall of water, it might look small now but when it got to me – it was up to my thighs. / More photos from the shoot of Mona Vale Pool - Got up at 4 to get to the pool for these shots, travelling petrol: $10 / - A can of WD40 to water proof the camera: $4.95 / (to use this – Hahah…. you sprey it onto a piece of cloth the wipe you camera with it, avoiding the lens and viewfinder….not sprey directly onto the camera….so what ever to reply moisture is good. It also stop salt sprey clinging itself on the camera too.) / - Stand in front of an on coming wall of sea water (Being scare sh#tless): PRICELESS!

I’m temporally challenged so dawn shots are rare for me but a couple of times a year near to daylight saving change-overs the sun stops getting up at a silly hour and becomes rather more civilised. I was lucky enough to shoot this after a night of rain so the rock pool on top of the cliffs was full. Shot off Bundeena Cliffs, Royal National Park, Sydney. It was an early morning start. I was meeting a friend for a sunrise shoot. The location was all planned out, so was the time – unfortunately we still missed each other. It was my fault. I went to the South end of the beach, he was at the Northern end. / / Sometimes a mistake can actually turn into luck, and this was the case here. A wonderfully still morning, beautiful light and the moon to boot….. / / I did eventually meet up with my friend after he finally answered his mobile, but wow was I glad I overshot the Northern Entrance…. After shooting the pool at the Surf Lifesaving Club. I went for a rock hop around the corner and got to the Ladies pool just after the sun had come over the horizon. For about 15 minutes the sun was a really intense golden colour and lit up the water beautifully.

This small rock pool is found in Cabbage Tree Bay, along the pathway between Manly and Shelly Beach on Sydney’s northern beaches. The sculpture/statue is known as The Oceanids. This image was a 30 second exposure nearly an hour before sunrise with the pool wall and sculpture lit up by a nearby street light. This image has also won a photo of the week at photographer Steve Parish’s Photograph Australia website.

Caught the last sunrise before the end of daylight savings…..thankfully the rain stopped and some colour popped through the clouds to make it all worth while ;0)

Best Viewed LARGE / A bit of work in this one. A HDR Panarama. / Photomatic used for HDR processing. / Did take 7 bracketed images however only used +2ev/0ev/-2ev images. It was 6 images in portrait making a total of 42 images taken, but only 18 used to create the image you see. Also used a neutral density filter. Equipment / Nikon D300 / 16-85mm VR f/3.5-5.6 / tripod / Cokin ND filter / Circular polariser / remote release A Big THANK YOU to those that take the time and effort to peruse my images.
