A sequence of 3 shots showing 4 ducklings clambering from a pond. One of them is featured in an earlier shot (entitled Help Me Mum), getting a hand from mum. My wife has framed the three shots @ 10×8 and mounted them staggered (a la flying geese) :-) in the hall, to the delight of all who visit.

I love the brightly coloured beak of the moorhen so pretty, and they make me laugh when they chase each other and seem to walk on water…..

Moorhen chicks have black, downy feathers except round the eye and bill. Juveniles have browner underparts and lack the red frontal shield. The eggs would of been smooth and glossy, greyish-white to green with reddish-brown or grey markings. They are about 43 mm by 31 mm. Both parents incubate the eggs and look after the precocial nestlings, which when newly hatched are fed in the nest for a couple of days before swimming with their parents. The moorhen is a medium-sized, ground-dwelling bird, that is usually found near water. From a distance it looks black with a ragged white line along its body. Up close it is olive-brown on the back and the head and underneath are blue-grey. It has a red bill with a yellow tip. They eat water plants, seeds, fruit, grasses, insects, snails and worms.

This was in Madison,WI at one of the area’s garden. I was taking a picture in the shade and I really enjoy the depths it offers to the viewer.

Sarah P. Duke Gardens – Water Lilies / Durham, NC
This unusual wildflower, AKA Bullhead Lily (Nuphar variegatum), is found floating on the water’s surface in North American swamps and marshes. Captured from a kayak with a Nikon D40X and 105 mm Micro-Nikkor lens.
I did not know that I captured all the star-shaped sun burst all around this lotus flower in my garden pond until I viewed on my monitor. A very pleasant surprise. Sometimes you just get lucky.
