  • Palm Frond : Photo taken in Samoa, upon the island of Upolu.

  • Light, Humidity, Rain, Life.

  • Every child I passed on the roads of Samoa, straight after school had the biggest grin on their faces, they slowly would make their way home along the gravel and dirt street or leisurely along the beach, unless they were running in a group to get the best vantage point to jump into the local rock pool! Aaah Samoana days! :)

  • Aaaaah, a relaxing morning is all one wants, but more could be afforded if your view was such, across the turquoise blues and greens of a Tahitian shore, it would truly be selfish to ask for more. What else could you want then Coffee, fruit, flowers and food ?

  • I am hopeless at fishing, though can be amused by the little slippy critters for hours! / The colours and shapes are just too much to ignore!

  • Ke ala i Kahiki , meaning ” the way to Tahiti”. This collage gives tribute to the maiden voyage of the “HOKULE’A”. A ship designed and sailed according to traditional Hawaiian way-finding (navigating only by the stars, Sun, wind and currents.) Which gave birth to the “Polynesian Voyaging Society” and what some call the beginnings of a Polynesian Cultural Revival, in 1976. / Such a feet, whilst being a brave adventure, is but a re-introduction of what was an integral part of Polynesian society, such voyages between Hawaii and Tahiti in ancient times was not by chance, but purposeful and common place, as was it else where in Polynesia and through out the Pacific. / “Hokule’a” is Hawaiian for “Star of Gladness” and gladness it was for many Hawaiians, in which what was rekindled was a link to their ancestors and distant cousins and thus a greater vision and awareness of being Polynesian. / The significance of this event can not be understated and must be placed along other notable and life changing events of the 20th century. / This Collage shows the “Hokule’a” and her crew crossing the equator toward Tahiti, lead by a pod of nai’a (dolphins). Green and verdant Tahiti stands, the sun rises as the moon above bids farewell. A visit to http://pvs.kcc.hawaii.edu/index.html would feed the imagination concerning the triumph of this voyage and all that has sailed in wake of the “Hokule’a’s” first voyage.

  • ” ‘O Savai’i ‘o le motu moni o le ōlaga faigatā o Sāmoa.” The island of Savaii is a relatively unspoilt and beautiful place, clean and inviting. This photo is of a beach fale’ ( samoan hut/house ) upon a beach on the north coast of Savaii, the largest of the Samoan islands. If you ever go there, don’t go looking for the hotels in the islands with their conveniences, go to the villages, met the people support the local economies and stay in their Fale’s, to know a place, you must meet and know its people. I can’t wait to i go back!

  • Tiki-auaha, the first man , the founder of man kind, the Adam of Polynesian and world creation. A universal and understood figure, though shrouded in mystery , a person of faith, of cultural truth. The ancestor of man! The similarities of he and the Adam of the bible are indeed strong.

  • Aloha is such a used word, that it is used in passing, as in something that is fun, cool or kooky. Unfortunate at times, for the word its self denotes a lifestyle or state of being, of special reference from one person to another. Aloha can be expressed in many ways, though primarily as a greeting, to speak in positive and well wishing terms as a salutation. Here it is used as “Aloha Nui Loa”, meaning “With much love” or ” warmest of greetings” The two tiki here are ancestors, i am sure many of our fore bearers look upon us as a cloud of witnesses to our daily lives, sending Aloha and encouraging us on our earthly walk?

  • The Lone Fisherman From Fiti. Fiti being the ancient name for modern day Fiji. This Fisherman is on his Va’a ( outrigger) chasing a dashing fish, riding the slow heaving surf, he calmly chases his prey.

  • The Kingfisher is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful birds in the world. A bird that can be found living, wintering and breeding from the United kingdom, across Europe and Asia to Papua New Guinea. Truly a world traveller, there are 86 species of Kingfisher worldwide, the Australian Kookaburra itself is part of the kingfisher family. Here i have rendered the kingfisher in collage – truly a unique bird.

  • O’Tahiti Nui, a lagoon and verdent landscape surrounded by emerald turquoise seas, trade winds gently pressing upon the shore line, a lone person canoes with no destination. Perhaps this sounds romantic, fantastical and the idea of a brilliant holiday, though it is also a lament, a ode to things past as well as a hope for things future, yes…. O’Tahiti Nui, the real Tahiti…............ O’Tahiti Nui is a title reserved for the larger part of the island of Tahiti, though this collage is a composite of many of the islands that dot central polynesia, currently known as French Polynesia…..............A place one day i plan on getting truly lost in, who knows one day i might not return?

One of my favourite beaches on Maui in Hana near Hamoa on the east shore. / © 2008 Sharon Anne Mau “Some historians claim that sometime around the fourth or fifth century A.D., the first planned migrations came from the Marquesas, in extreme eastern Polynesia. For five centuries the Marquesans settled and lived peacefully on the new land – Hawai’i. “Walk and touch peace every moment. / Walk and touch happiness every moment. / Each step brings a fresh breeze. / Each step makes a flower bloom. / Kiss the Earth with your feet. / Bring the Earth your love and happiness. / The Earth will be safe when we feel safe in ourselves.” by Thich Nhat Hanh

  • One of my “Sculpted Pictures”, a Maori Warrior, tattooed, with a bone comb, a greenstone earring and necklace, and his feathered cloak.

  • Some thing one day is as the next, though each sunset heralds and end to what will never be again…...... opportunities, love, life , colour…...... beautiful and serene, each sunset is when man remains unseen :)

I don’t think that’s what we’re really seeking. I think what we’re seeking is an experience of being alive, so that our life experiences on the purely physical plane will have resonances within our own innermost being and reality, so that we actually feel the rapture of being alive.” Copyright 2009 – 2010 © Sharon Mau / ourjrny / The Heart Within the Art / My images do not belong to the public domain. / Reproduction is strictly prohibited. / All rights reserved Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi / Shooting Date/Time: 30 August 2009 12:34:40 PM / Tv 1/250 / Av 10.0 / ISO 100 / Lens EF28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM / One-Shot AF / Drive Mode Single-frame shooting
