Something I wrote a long time ago for English class. It’s a parody of “A Modest Proposal” by Jonathan Swift. and obviously I’m not serious. The statistics are probably very different by now too. Anyway, this is just for amusement so don’t take it too seriously. :]

  • Polvo Soliloquy
    by montdragon

God or gods tend the myths and humankind is unkind pretending that the trinity of body mind and soul lives each day the sanity….

Earth is unique of course that is just an opinion and an understatement there could possibly be untold numbers of planets with life forms. Whether you believe in a creator or evolution that is a zero-sum endless debate that just pings and pongs neither position is really provable, if it were it would be the end of the discussion and of course “discussion” is a euphemism, a bow wow doggerel barking regarding life forms and this planet. So many legends and anomalies in history regarding mans origin and yes gods and God and Earth sometimes called Terra and yes Gaia. Our planet is a living breathing entity just like you and me. Plant a seed add water it grows, life forms abound everywhere and just about anywhere the planet is soil and water, alive. Alive and resilient should the current life forms cease to exist this planet possibly could reinvent itself…by itself or with some higher power, no answer to that question we will never know. For now I can enjoy what is available, that may change and like some legends you could ask “are we not gods (?)” in some respects yes, we have free will and can make choices that have a cause and effect…every action humankind makes has a reaction….we are the current resident custodians responsible for the Earth and our tenure may just be over we have collectively made some very bad choices.

  • Unearthing the Human
    by MetalDragoness

As volcanoes erupt and spew ash / and the glaciers melt into the sea / As the winds churn / and the cities burn

Centuries have passed and still we extract all she has to give. The land in which we live on we take more than we need and bleed her dry. It is painful to see the pollution, and the depths to which people will go to have what they need. Here we kill now for oil to provide energy when there are other methods. But too costly they are to research. Lining the pockets of the government while blood is spilled tainting the land from which we came.

Written thinking about all the new carbon trading schemes and how it seems to have changed nothing other than a few balance sheets. / Plug an electric motor into an existing power supply, connect the motor to a electricity generator and see if you end up producing more power than you consume. / If it was that simple we would be doing it now. It is that simple. We don’t simply because of the coal miners daughter, or is it the share holders ? Published in the Maryborough and District Advertiser, Friday 18th July 2008

  • Humanity
    by Sarah Heddle

Killing forests, polluting seas / Building cities full of smoke / Butchering animals as we please / Toxic clouds enough to choke

I still remember the exact time and moment I wrote this. I was in my grade 12 world politics class. We were watching a movie about some sort of political struggle in Africa (I think….). Any ways, I was suddenly inspired to write this. I didn’t have a spare sheet of paper so I wrote it down in my agenda in any blank space I could find.

  • The Ripple
    by LDRPhoto

Upon the gritty, stony shore I perched in earnest contemplation, / And lobbing a pebble amid the bluish green liquid serenity- / I marveled…

This was originally written as a statement on man’s relationship with nature. It did, however, turn out to reflect much of man’s relationship with man or lack thereof. This work was written in the styles of Wordsworth, Shelley, and many other far more talented writers than myself.
