It’s a splash of tar on asphalt. Well . . . and some heavy work in Photoshop. I had to knock out each of those areas with the path tool using the Bezier function. It was taken with the Olympus E500 (I love this camera lots and lots. I’ll toss it over for the E3, but it’ll hurt some. Olympus engineers got it goin’ on.) and the 14-45 lens. Just as an aside, it seems somewhat ironic that I’ve never much cared for Pollock as an artist. I shot this on Jackson street in Green Bay, with no intention towards much of anything. God knows, I’ll stick a camera almost anywhere . . . the more it upsets people, the happier I am. But the name of the street stuck in my mind and it turned into what it is. I’m doing much the same thing with a section of sidewalk that has some weird patterns in it. Except, in this case, they remind me of heiroglyphic writing and cave paintings. A highlight here, some color there . . . if you let me get away with it, I’ll declare cement to be art. Of course, art is something of a communication between creator and viewer, therefore a shared definition of terminology follows from that. Bah, humbug. Next thing you know, people will be saying I can’t declare myself emperor because they don’t think I am.

*Oil and oil stick on Canvas (Diptych) 120×180 cm / Francis Keevil Gallery / Double Bay Sydney / Dec 11 – 25th 2008. (SOLD) “The Painters” are Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock, Pablo Picasso and Frida Kahlo. It’s a homage of sorts to several artists I have been interested in over the years. / There is a degree of metaphor interwoven throughout this large work which had been hanging on my studio wall for quite some time in various degrees of completion whilst I procrastinated over changes and over painting areas. / Finally out of the studio though and bound for someones home eventually. Incidently, the “hand” earring that Frida Kahlo is wearing was a gift from Pablo Picasso whom she met while in Paris. The hand makes reference at what is called in Mexico “milagros”. Milagros are pieces made of wax or ivory shaped in the form of the part of the human body that the person wants to be healed, and left on the altar of the Saint they pray to. Some close ups:

My school had a day where we had to dress up in clothes from a protest era, there were many brilliant out fits put together from hippies, to communists to Apartheid protesters. My friend dressed up as a hippie and she was so colourful and covered in jewelry i had to get a shot. The colours and handmade top with all the jewelry made me think of the quote b Jackson Pollock, It doesn’t matter how the paint is put on, as long as something is said Model: Claudi Featured In Peace Love & Happiness Hippies
William Pollock started as an owner-driver in the haulage business in 1935 and, despite the hiccup of Nationalisation in 1949, the fleet had grown to 23 vehicles by 1960. The colour scheme of torquoise, blue and red became a regular sight on the Great North Road as the backbone of Pollock’s work was the night trunk from their Musselbburgh depot at Edinburgh to London. The credit for naming individual vehicles goes to one of William’s sons,Ian,who joined the business in 1963, and this Atkinson artic of 1964 was named after the American series shown on British television in the early sixties and is fighting its way along the old A1 with a load of paper for London. The fleet grew during the sixties to 60 plus and the names included “Day Tripper”,”Thunderbird”,”Early Bird”, Grand Slam” and “French Connection”. This painting, originally done for a transport calendar was purchased for the company boardroom of Pollocks where it now hangs. The original of this painting was in oils on a 20”x30” board. A painting like this of your favourite vehicle, British or American, in oils on canvas or board would cost about £1000.
