Bumblebees are social insects that are characterized by black and yellow body hairs, often in bands. However, some species have orange or red on their bodies, or may be entirely black. Another obvious (but not unique) characteristic is the soft nature of the hair (long, branched setae), called pile, that covers their entire body, making them appear and feel fuzzy. They are best distinguished from similarly large, fuzzy bees by the form of the female hind leg, which is modified to form a corbicula; a shiny concave surface that is bare, but surrounded by a fringe of hairs used to transport pollen (in similar bees, the hind leg is completely hairy, and pollen grains are wedged into the hairs for transport). Like their relatives the honey bees, bumblebees feed on nectar and gather pollen to feed their young. I will donate 100% of proceeds from the sales of this image to The Wildlife Trusts

About 10 bees decided to visit this arum lily as I wanted to practice my macro skills. As I am allergic to bee sting, I was naturally cautious and tried to get a nice photo of them all, but I thought this one was a good one to showcase the bees busy to collect pollen. Normally the pollen stuck to their legs are yellow, but it seems that this flower gives them a white powdery pollen

I was trying the macro setting on my 70-300mm lens in a field of flowers surrounded by these buzzing Bumbles. I am definetly going to invest in a dedicated macro lens… any suggestions as to what to get? I use a Canon 400D.

Trying out a borrowed Canon 100 macro lens today in preparation for the purchase of a dedicated macro lens. Plenty of activity in the garden after recent rains and now some nice balmy pre summer weather. Have you ever noticed that you never see an unhappy bee? Bee Happy…. Canon 400D with 100 Canon macro lens.

Going through some old images and found this shot showing pollen dripping down from the centre of the flower. Really liked the colour offsets in this. Was used in an exhibition I shared with Smarti77 sometime ago. Shot with a Canon 400D – 18-55 lens.

Was actually taking a picture of the Zucchini Flower and didn’t notice this little chap- well I wouldn’t as it was covered from head to sting in Pollen- having the time of its little life in there!!!
