A shot of a polar bear shortly after it had dived into it’s underwater enclosure.
This was the best day of our Artic trip, we were so lucky to spend hours with this polar bear mum and cubs (there were actually two cubs but the other is out of shot). This cub was around seven months old and full of joy! / I really like the tender love the cub shows for its mum. / / (Spitzbergen – Scandinavian Arctic) / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /
WILD & FREE / / We were very lucky with our bear sightings at Spitsbergen in the Scandinavian Arctic which allowed us to get some nice close-up shots. These cubs were around 7 months old, and loved to copy mum! / / (Spitzbergen – Scandinavian Arctic) / / >< / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /

WILD AND FREE / / As I said on my “Polar Love” image, this was the best day of our Arctic trip. We were so lucky to spend hours with this mum and cubs as they moved around the ice flows. These cubs were around seven months old and full of joy – although they did not seem all that keen to follow mum this time! / / The sea ice is shrinking at an alarming rate, which has a huge impact for the bears as this is their main hunting ground. More and more bears are being found to have drowned while trying to find the ice, even though they can swim up to sixty miles or so! / / I hope the ice does not completely vanish and that they always have somewhere to hut! When I first spotted Jódís Eiríksdóttir’s “A Little Planet” in the buyer’s booth I was mezmerised. I’d never seen anything quite like it. A little further investigation revealed that what I was staring at was a polar panorama. My next thought was “how did she do it?” I’ve managed to hunt down the following resources for those who would like to give it a try but you can find more online by searching “Polar Panorama Tutorial”. Basic ingredients include a digital camera to shoot your panorama and PhotoShop or Gimp to work the magic. If anyone’s had more experience making these then we’d love to see a tutorial or hear your hints and tips! Tutorial: Create Your Own Planets (PhotoShop and Gimp) How to make planet-like panoramas with photoshop Stereographic Projection is a similar technique which involves a bit more effort and a whole lot more maths but if you’re keen to find out more then try these resources: Stereographic Projection (wikipedia) Wee Planets Or you could just make yourself a cuppa, pull up a comfy chair and marvel at these wonderful images … / Lighthouse World by Digerati / Caloundra QLD Polar Panorama by Lars / Little Planet – Julianapark 01 Utrecht by mtths / Small world of Provincetown by Alyeska / Lonely Planet by Peter Marin And there are more over at the Polar Panorama Planets group …

I have been selected to join the Australian THEBIPOLAREXPEDITION and to ski to the South Pole in November 2009. THEBIPOLAREXPEDITION a not-for-profit initiative is aimed at building a new awareness about the issues facing people with Bipolar Disorder and to raise funds to give grants for vital research into the causes and more effective diagnosis. We have partnered with the Australian Rotary Health Research Fund and the Black Dog Institute, and have arranged for Network Ten to be a media sponsor. The Bipolar Expedition is an exciting adventure aimed at raising awareness and money for research into Bipolar Affective Disorder. The Bipolar Expedition involves two treks – one to the South Pole in November 2008 and one to the North Pole in April 2009. Video footage from both will be made into a documentary about Bipolar Expedition (and fundraising activities during the lead up to the treks) . I am hoping to raise money for the project through a number of activities including the sale of this T shirt. http://web.me.com/davidcregan/Bipolar/WELCOME.html
An acrylic painting I did in 2002. In certain lights it looked almost as though it would swim right out of the pic and into the lounge :) I used an airbrush, for the first time to get the light beams effect. He is a Johannesburg zoo polar bear in real life, or should that be “unreal” :( Climate Change has already made huge inroads into their habitat…

My attempt at illustrating the plight of polar bears – and the effect that global warming is having on them. You may be able to see the earth within it’s hair, circled by other animals. / I’m trying to show, that although these majestic animals may be the only ones that are being affected by global warming at the moment, that won’t last long. We are all in this together. ** / Created from a graphite drawing and edited in photoshop. Stock credits can be found here
