Every week I randomly select a Red Bubbler and give them a quick 5 Q&A interogation! / This weeks Red Bubbler is gerijuliaj / A very talented Artist who captured my imagination with her creation and dedication to Bob Dylan entitled Forever Young #2 / / / / Ok, enough with the love and on with the show… / / Name five people who have had an influence on your life (whether it be personal or artistic) and why? / / I guess everyone’s parents affect their lives to some extent and my parents were no exception. Their love of music and open and intelligent discussion on everything from politics to art definitely inspired me. / My friend Neil – (we never actually went out together)...we met at about the age of 18. He inspired me with his knowledge and genius on all things spiritual, artisitc and architectural. / He helped me to see the beauty in the everyday and nature. We would spend hours solving the problems of the world together whilst at the same time drawing or painting and drinking copius amounts of red wine whilst listening to the ‘latest’ underground music…he was an aristocrat from a very wealthy influential family…related to royalty, so I also learnt how to mind my ‘Ps and Qs’. Sadly we lost touch around 5yrs ago, but I believe he is still working as an architect in the South of England restoring old buildings. / As a child my first profound artistic moment came when i saw a painting of Monet’s Poppies… / I could not take my eyes off it and to this day Poppies and the wonderful golden colour of grass in Summer is still one of the most beautiful sights that i will ever see. / My partner Brian who is a Journalist. His approach to life and work regardless of the dangers, opposition and outfall have never failed to move and inspire me. / He has helped and encouraged me in a way that few people would in selling my artworks ‘door to door’ and always having complete and utter faith in me as an human being/artist/photographer. He will ‘sit’ for me as my muse and has in the past driven several hundred klms so I can get the ‘right photo’…I am V lucky! / I have had a few forays into photography and due to unforeseen circumstances have had to put it on hold. In 2003 whilst working at Capital Magazine, Canberra I was fortunate to work for Elizabeth Hawkes as her ‘sometime’ photographic assistant and realised once more my love of the medium. / Finally, my two daughters Faith and Lauren…who are a constant inspiration to me. Faith for her strength and beauty of spirit and wisdom beyond her years. She keeps me grounded. Lauren and I have weathered some major storms together mostly due to her being paralysed in a car accident when she was 4yrs old…Her suffering has been mine and vice versa…but the inspiration and love from both my girls is something that will surpass time. / / Name five people you would like to have over for a dinner party and why… and also what you would cook for them? / / JOHN LENNON for his wonderful wit, music and intelligence…he also had heaps of charisma…a wonderful ingredient! / BILLY CONNOLLY/PAMELA ANDERSON…sorry I’m sneaking in partners. Billy is probably the only person that has made me laugh so much I almost cried…and everyone needs to laugh more. / BILL HENSON. I soooo want to know what inspires him as a photographer and just adore his photos. Hopefully he can give me some useful tips. / PEGGY GUGGENHEIM. She lived the most amazing life amongst some of the most famous artists of the 19th/20th century and created what is still today one of the most amazing galleries…the Museum of Contemporary Art in NY. I would love to ask her what she thought of Copntemporary Art /photography today and where she saw it going. / KEVIN RUDD (KEV 07/08/09 and beyond)...What a man..Our new Prime Minister…24/07 Kev…what would he have to say about where Australia is going and important issues like global warming etc., I think he has a sense of humour too and would probably be the ‘surprise’ of the evening! / RICHARD E GRANT. Shit I loved that movie he made ‘Wah Wah’…it rang bells in my head despite the fact i never grew up in S Africa. What an amazing story…he would add a dash of ‘eloquence’ to the group. / (if I could add one more…we need a GOOD LOOKING MAN HERE…how about good old George Clooney) / If I was cooking, which I would add I am very good at..I am a Cancerian and we by nature are the homebodies, I would cook ‘Seafood Lasagne’ because everytime i cook it, people go into raptures over it, but I also make the best ‘coq au van’ …but because I would like to sit and talk to our guests, which by the way are seated on a trestle table near the shore of ……...................beach in SA get back to you on the name, it escapes me at the moment…the temperature is around 25 deg and the sun is about to set. I would like my favourite chefs to cook the meal..Maggie Beer from the Barossa as she understands how to use local and fresh produce to its best and Delia Smith just for being ‘brilliant’ in the art of cooking. I would like them to serve up an array of mouth watering tempters ….a degustation menu ….full of lots of interesting and succulent ‘tit bits’ just like the guests! / / Name five songs that changed your world… (if not songs then bands or singers)? / / 1. Kate Melua – Nine Million Bicycles. For simple reason it is such a beautiful song and I just love Katie’s voice. / 2. The Church – Under the Milky Way tonight. I have always liked this song; it is beautiful yet poignant and took on even more meaning when it was chosen to be played at my stepson Heath’s funeral 2 years ago. / 3. John Lennon – Dream. One of my favourite JL songs and REM also do a great version. / 4. Fleetwood Mac – Gypsy. It reminds me of my time living in a share house in Darwin after my marriage break-up. I moved about 5 times in only a few years and yes had very few possessions, other than some “lace and paper flowers”. / 5. Little Heroes – One Perfect Day. As someone who migrated from UK, it reminds me of friends and family still ‘over there’ and wishing they were nearer. / I also love everything by INXS, Cold Chisel and Ice House for introducing me to Aussie Music – some of the best music ever written and I was so glad to be in Australia in the 1980s to experience it firsthand. / / Describe yourself in five words… / / Dreamer, Energetic, Optimistic, Obsessive, Indecisive / / List 5 things about you that we would have never guessed… / / 1. I worked as a model in the 80s and was featured in some pretty forgettable TV ads. / 2. Being a ‘Jill’ of all trades, I also spent 10 yrs working in politics, 5 years of which was spent working for a senior Cabinet Minister at parliament House Canberra. In between I worked as a full-time artist running a reasonably successful hand-painted clothing business. / 3. I hate Peanut Butter – it is honestly the only food I cannot bear to even look at. / 4. I am petrified of heights to the point where I had to be rescued from the top of St Paul’s Cathedral in London some years ago after I foolishly climbed to the top and just froze. I also don’t like staying in high rise Hotels; especially with balconies for fear of sleepwalking over the edge….did I say I was paranoid? / 5. Yes, I used to sleepwalk as a child….hence the fear above! Thankfully haven’t done it since attaining adulthood. / / Thanks gerijuliaj!! :D

Every now and again I randomly select a Red Bubbler and give them a quick 5 Q&A interogation! / This weeks Red Bubbler is PhotogeniquE IPA / / / / A bloke who is incredibly talented and has a sense of humour that keeps alot of us regularily entertained! / / Check out his work here / / Ok, enough back slapping… lets get with the lyrical! :D / / PLV – Name five people who have had an influence on your life (whether it be personal or artistic) and why? / / Billy Graham – because he has, through his steadfast belief, preaching and integrity, done more good in the world in the past 80 years than all the politicians and pundits put together. Jesus – I don’t really need to explain do I? Jan (my Wife) – when we first met, in 1967, I was a emotionally crippled young man of 19. She taught me so much about myself, painful at times, and so much about how to relate to other people. Rev H. Brash Bonsell – Principal of the Birmingham Bible Institute, and a man for whom there was no mould. He was a wonderful eccentric, and a man of prayer. Rev Bob Dunnett – Such spiritual wisdom and grace in one person. If I could be half as wise and spiritual as he is, I would be ten times as wise and spiritual as I am / / PLV – Name five people you would like to have over for a dinner party and why… and also what you would cook for them? / / Richard Dawkins, The Atheist. / Polly Toynbee, President of British Humanist Association. / The Pope. / The Archbishop of Canterbury. / and Jesus……. / ......... because I would love to see what they would all say when confronted by Jesus, the person they either revile, dismiss or claim to serve, and more interestingly, what he would say to them. / Food, of course, would be unleavened bread, freshly caught fish cooked over a wood fire on the shore of a lake and red wine! / / PLV – Name five songs that changed your world… (if not songs then bands or singers)? / / w0w, only 5?...........tough! The Times They Are A Changing – Peter Paul and Mary. It was they who really alerted the world to Dylan’s songs, and were the vanguard of 60s protest and they are still singing and protesting in song. Wonderful. It was their music that inspired me to start playing guitar. Music can change the World! I Can’t Explain – The Who. I can still remember where I was and what I was doing when I first heard this on the radio; half way out of a loft, perched on a stair bannister! Who rules? The Who Do! Anthem for Doomed Youth – Wilfred Owen – OK, I know it’s a poem, but then what is a song if not a sung poem? Although, “Dulce et Decorum Est” is his most celebrated poem, this is one that first got to me. As relevant in our day of the Iraq conflict, as it was when written over 90 years ago; nothing changes. Coz I Luv You – Slade. Another stop-you-in-your-tracks moment. The best rock band to come out of Wolverhampton. In fact, the only band to come out of Wolverhampton (not true really……) Canto Della Terra – Andrea Bocelli. The first time I heard this was on SKY – Classic FM TV Channel (now sadly defunked) and I just cried listening to it. Still do! Such power, such emotion and what a voice! Turned me on to a genre of music I never thought I would enjoy! / / PLV – Describe yourself in five words! / / Meaty, Beaty, Big And Bouncy…. and Bald (yes, I know, The Who again!!) / / PLV – List 5 things about you that we would have never guessed… / / I can juggle – only 3 balls, but even so……... I once had to make myself redundant from a charity I worked for (long story). I took my son, Joel, sailing when he was about 3 years old and managed to knock him overboard before we even left the pontoon. He had a life-jacket on, of course, and was fine, if somewhat wet! He hasn’t forgotten it though! Ooops! I built my own Low ‘C’ whistle from an old copper water pipe using just a hacksaw, drill and small hammer. Still use it and the tone ain’t half bad. I built a Mirror Dinghy in my bedroom when I was 15. Luckily it was on the ground floor and had large french windows into the back garden. .....and if I may be permitted to add one thing that I’ve learned from my life so far: / / Almost nothing turns out the way you thought it would

I’ve had a thought in my head all day and thought I’d lay the question out here. Does photography have to trancend into ‘art’ to become sellable? I’m not aiming this or having a whinge at all, just asking a question and hopefully trying to sort out a reasonable answer. For example, two of my all time favorite RB contributors… the infamous PLV and Paul Vanzella have work in their portfolios which have obviously started life as photos however by the time they get onto RB they have been tranformed in masterful works of art. Why is this so popular and is it a trend that is worth looking into further to make my work viable in an ever fluctuating market?

The distance between every two degrees is like the distance between the sky and the Earth, so if you ask Allah for anything, ask Him for the Firdaus, for it is the last part of Paradise and the highest part of Paradise, and at its top there is the Throne of Beneficent, and from it gush forth the rivers of Paradise.” (hadith 9.93.519) / Source : http://www.ankerberg.com / ...And when i read this it made sense to me… of my life… but i was a bit wary of the word JIHAD… cuz due to all the war and killing… and so i went to research the true meaning of Jihad, and once again… it all fell into place. / What is the meaning of Jihad? / Literally, jihad means doing one’s utmost to realize a goal. It is not the equivalent of war, for which Arabic and the Qur’an use qital. Jihad has a wider connotation and embraces every kind of striving in God’s cause. A mujahid is devoted to his or her cause; uses all physical, intellectual, and spiritual capacities to serve it. / More/sourced : Meaning of Jihad / ...and my goal is that for me to reach my dreams thru my art and to inspire others to do the same…. as i truly believe that is how we find enlightment, by reaching our utmost creative gifts. Look after our gifts and it will look after you. / “Let the Beauty of what you love, be what you do” (Rumi / Sufi quote, the mystics of Islam)

If money or responsibilities were not an option… where would you be right now and what would you be doing? / / I’d be in Fiesole, Tuscany… my soul home… studying Etruscan History, writing amongst my vegies and herbs, learning Italian from my neighbours. Taking trips all throughout Italy until; I master a dish from each region. Watch Mark paint canvas after canvas. And finally learn the Cello. / / PLV – 2. Did you grow up to be what you grew up wanting to be? Care to explain? / / I wanted to be a Nurse, like my grandmother and mother….my life changed when I had my first child, very young. I left school after year 10 and had three children by the time I was 21. I did go on to study at Uni but my choice of study was an Arts degree (Ancient Civilisations) and I’m yet to use it. I don’t believe I really have a vocation – I’ve been content in my employment; I have been working for a large Telco for 5 years. As it turns out… I think I would have made a great nurse ;) / / PLV – 3. You are stranded on a desert island and given 5 foods you will have to eat for the rest of your life… What will you choose? Add a drink or two just for balance! / / Rice / Vegetables / Pasta / Bread / Meat / / Hehe does that count? Or do I have to pick dishes. I’m married to a wonderful man, another year there. / / BUT… Then there is the year after I left my first marriage (1995). After being told, I’d amount to nothing, that I was in fact nothing… by my first husband. I worked out, I was something. My children and I blossomed, I started Uni. I started a part time job, I had almost NO money, but somehow I took care of my children; in what now seems like a grand style. I discovered, the arts – theatre, art galleries, conversation, I found my voice. / / PLV – 5. If you had been an actor/actress what 5 movies would you have loved to have starred in and why? / / Oh this is hard – as I can easily pick my five favourite movies. / / Judy Garland – Dorothy – The Wizard of Oz / For the adventure, her compassion and strength – even though she had lost sight of “there is no place like home” / / Robin Williams – John Keating – Dead Poets Society / To inspire passion, enthusiasm, and loyalty in others; is an incredible gift and admirable. / / Audrey Tautou – Amélie / Oh geez, just to be Amelie would be it for me….to be quirky, carefree, yet caring, crazy yet sane. Makes the most sense, I’ve ever seen. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous… / / The last two are slightly different, they are not just about the roles and actors but about those they worked with. / / Susan Sarandon – Sister Helen Prejean – Dead Man Walking. / Firstly, for those that know me – they will get my Nun fascination, hehe. But primarily I would love to work beside Sean Penn, for me one of the finest actors, ever. / / Morgan Freeman … Ellis Boyd Redding – The Shawshank Redemption / He held his dignity and persevered to find his utopia against all the odds. And OMG got to work with Tim Robbins…whose performance and character I shall never forget. /

This weeks Red Bubbler up for interogation is the hugely talented shanghaiwu / / / / I absoluetly love the way this lady describes her art… / FUSIONARTPHOTOGRAPHY / “(this is not collage, this is not montage) I fuse these photographs together within my mind” / / I’ve got a couple of favs for you to check out…. / / / / Ok, enough from me and more from her!! :D PLV – If money or responsibilities were not an option… where would you be right now and what would you be doing? / / Responsibilities are the issue with me / Ah, so let’s pretend I have none of these responsibilities… / I would walk the world with camera in hand for the rest of my life… and without saying/ a laptop nearby. / / PLV – Did you grow up to be what you grew up wanting to be? Care to explain? / / I grew up in complete oblivion to an art and photographic world and very focused on my responsibilities/all very harmonious but conforming. The classroom was my private and wonderful world . I did not grow up wanting to be a teacher but slipped into this role with great ease. / By going to live in Japan my mind was opened/my mind was changed . With this new awakening comes a period of huge unsettlement/much discovery about ones’ self and others . / Whilst in Japan a woman asked if she could read the tea leaves in my cup. I do not believe in this rubbish but said ok. She told me I would have 2 lives and yes ….she was right. / I have not answered your question but hey what the heck. Seems my life has changed so such nothing is a certainty.. / / PLV – You are stranded on a desert island and given 5 foods you will have to eat for the rest of your life… What will you choose? Add a drink or two just for balance… / / food…dry biscuits/dips/yoghurt/californian rolls/roast chicken / Drinks… coke/water / / PLV – Up until now, what has been the best year in your life (199? or 198?) and what happened in that year that made it so great? / / Guess if I am truthful here you will know that I am not 20 and asian. So will have to go for my 3rd choice of year and that is 2005/wandering the streets of Shanghai and nearby canal towns with my very close friend of 7 years. This was the most wonderful year of sharing the most amazing experiences and side by side watching the changing China. Day after day our days were filled with excitement and wonder.I took the photographs and she was the walking book of knowledge. Neither of us would have ever imagined the sadness to follow about a year later when she died tragically. / / PLV – If you had been an actor/actress what 5 movies would you have loved to have starred in and why? / / This is difficult as most movies are enjoyed at the moment and then most are gone from my mind.

Paul Louis Villani ♥ Paul Louis Villani….(I dated a Paul once…he was a prick) :| You on the other hand are not…you are one of the sweetest, nicest most generous men I have ever had the pleasure of meeting, watching and collaborating with on this site. How much has discovering redbubble changed your life? Firstly, you’re an absolute darl for saying such nice things about me! Secondly, Red Bubble was and still is a shining beacon for anyone seeking, exposure, collaboration with like minded folk and creative development regardless of how long you have been on your artistic journey. / Allow me to ellaborate… some of us have not studied art(s) in any form, so we develop in an unorthodox and unguided manner. We ( I most definately incuded) learn most artistic lessons the hard way. Finding your style and developing skills, getting exposure and exhibiting, getting your work “out there” and into the publics buying eye… Not easy or cheap in the real world… Red Bubble gives you all those things in one place, you just cannot get better than that and the best thing is that this place is just going to get better and better. Do you have a ‘most memorable’ redbubble moment? Well, I’ve got a few… My first Melbourne Meet-Up I was completely petrified about meeting people whose work and auras I really admired. Writers meets, these are quite fun and I get the honour of sitting around sipping a beer and listen to some really talented people, read and discuss their works. I keep saying this but one day some of us are going to be telling people “I used to attend a writers met with that famous person!!” if you don’t know what I’m talking about check these out. The Aradale get together was pretty magical and we’ve got another meet up coming at The Astor Theatre that I’m hoping will be quite memorable too! :D You are a talented writer and musician…Do you still play music? Now you’ve hit a nerve!! hehe! Music has been a huge part of my life and it’s something that I’m finding hard to let go of. I still write but now lack the belief or self confidence to share or perform. I keep saying “one day” but until I see a reflection in the mirror that I can feel proud of my own music will remain behind closed doors. / In regards to music in general… If I was stranded on an island and I had a chice of my ipod or a big screen TV with Foxtel… I’d always choose the ipod! :D Your favorite piece of ‘jaw dropping’ redbubble art? Damn, just one? Can’t do it… Here’s a few! / / / Ode to Led Zeppelin / Scorpio (Just a few is an understatement…I had to pull another 10 images out because of time and space…PLV could sell bikinis to eskimos :D) How do you like to relax? Sport. I’m a bit of a sports nut. Cricket is my first love, with Aussie Rules Footy and Golf not far behind. / I’m n ot the kind of bloke who sits and watches TV but if there is a game on I become completely mesmorised! / My missus freaks out at the fact that usually I cannot sit still, I’m always fidgeting or doing something yet put Test Cricket on the TV and I’ll set there motionless for hours at a time!! An event you will never forget? Oh, that’s easy! My recent wedding and honeymoon. If you want to see some pics from the honeymoon you have to be on facebook and click here I have a Sony DSLR A700 in one hand and an endless Chicken Parmagiana in the other….I’m offering you one of them…which would you choose and why? Hahahaha!!! Not fair honey!!!! Alrighty, if the Parma was accompanied by an entree of Lasagna and a desert of Apple Strudel, my decision would be very easy!! Alas, I’ll have to chosse the Alpha! I’ve been a Minolta user for years before the digital evolution so the transition to Sony was quite simple The last live concert you attended? Well, depending as to when this interview goes “live”… the last concert I payed to see was U2 in Melbourne… Awesome!! The next concert that I’m being “sent” to as a photographer is “The Who” in Sydney 31st March, can’t wait! The name of a song you remember from your childhood? Seasons in The Sun by Terry jacks / Close To You / Little Help From My Fiends Joe Cockers version / Purple Bear by Mac Davis / La Bambola – Tu Mi Fai Gira / The Man who Shot Liberty Valance by Gene Pitney / Guitara Suona Piu Piano by Nicola Di Bari / Black Diamond by KISS / Blue Spanish Eyes by Engelbert Humperdinck / San Francisco by Scott McKenzie / Whiter Shade of Pale by Procol Harum / Volare by Domenico Modugno / War Pigs by Black Sabbath….... / :D GOOGLE THEM! ;p Paul….to know that you will be a part of my memory forever is a blessing. I will always treasure you. :) x /
