Featured in Live, Love, Dream 5th Nov, 2008. / This is a beautiful thatched pub/restaurant, The Brace of Pheasants in Plush, Dorset. They have a wonderful menu and I was about to eat there, but, unfortunately, arrived at 15:05 and the kitchens closed at 15:00. Oh well, maybe next time. / The pub ‘sign’ is not a sign at all but an illuminated glass cabinet containing a brace of stuffed pheasants – a cock and a hen. I don’t know how long the glass box has been up there, but I know it wouldn’t be five minutes outside a London pub before some senseless yob would throw a brick at it.

Now that Molly is three years old, she asked if she could invite her friends to a slumber party. I was a bit reluctant knowing how noisy and chaotic a sleep over can be. I resigned myself that I would not sleep while her girlfriends laughed, gossiped, told secrets and played with her new toys, I asked her to make a list of her buddies that she wanted to invite. Although she is very popular, I told her that the limit was ten friends so she would have a more intimate party with those she invited. I think she wanted to invite all her girlfriends from camp to get more presents. Her loyalty to her friends of all breeds, religions and colors is a very endearing quality. I don’t know if you remembered Bertha, the flatulent Boxer who alienated all the campers by expelling excessive gas, especially in the pools where everyone laughed at the bubbles that poor Bertha could not control. Girls can be cruel as they enter adolescence and despite losing the Ms. Congeniality award, she befriend Bertha demonstrating her noble and keen sense of injustice. I could write a book about Molly’s adventures at Canyon Ranch Camp for Dogs. As predicted, the party was very loud and when Molly opened up her presents, she became hysterical at the amazing toys her friends chose, especially Bertha’s gift who is a bit unstable. Knowing that entering her room would be interpreted as intrusive, I had to leave quickly and caught this photo before Molly knew I was present. She is the most expressive dog and although she is twenty-one in human years, Irish Setters are very slow to mature. I wanted her to feel that she was the host of the party and I was a cool mom who stayed in the background. When I closed the door I heard woofs and whispers while her friends began pouncing on the bed and eating their party favors. Molly slipped Bertha some Beano hoping this would control her flatulence that could have been a big problem in a small room. Thankfully, Bertha did not want to be isolated and made several trips to the doggy door that leads outside. The next day Molly showed me her presents that were great fun except for a few that could be considered fun novelty toys for adults. I hope I made the right decision when I told her I also thought they were very humorous after she asked me to buy her another anatomically correct plush animal. Her favorites was Ted E Bear, Chubby Bear, Sir Johnson the Lion, Vinnie da Stallion and Morty the Moose. These amusing toys might have caused Molly to laugh until she cried, but there were other gifts or activities that also caused a canine riot in Molly’s room.
