BETTER VIEWED LARGER This is where the turbines were built, Cockatoo in its hey day could produce a whole ship with the exception i believe of the propeller Cockatoo Island is listed under the National Trust and has been returned tto the people not the developers ! It is now a very interesting tourist destination on Sydney Harbour, there is even camping on the island. The history of Cockatoo Island is emblematic of Australia’s history. Before the arrival of Europeans, it was undoubtedly used by the first Australians, the Aboriginal tribes of Sydney’s coastal region. In 1839 it was chosen as the site of a new penal establishment by the Governor of the colony of New South Wales, Sir George Gipps. Convicts were put to work building prison barracks, a military guardhouse and official residences. Not long after, the maritime history of Cockatoo Island began with the construction of the Fitzroy Dock by convicts. For the next 50 years the island was both a place of incarceration and the site of the colony’s ship repair and shipbuilding activities. During the twentieth century maritime activity grew, notably during World War I and World War II. For a time, Cockatoo Island was the largest shipbuilding yard in Australia. When the shipyard closed in 1992, Cockatoo Island lay dormant for a decade until the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust was established and given the responsibility of revitalising this significant site. The Trust is rehabilitating the island and creating one of the most unusual places to visit in the city. See More From the Cockatoo Island Series / Cockatoo Island Series

The ever pervasive ferns once more appear on an explore, this time in among the sand at the bottom of this filtration tank.
Today I had my first close encounter with snow geese, who appear to have migrated here for the winter. What a sight to see. The noise as they are in flight is just incredible! It appears to be advantageous to be on top during these close flights ….. notice the one “leaking” some hydraulic fluid? It was a really windy and freezing day when we shot this… I’d had this idea of using milk to contrast with Johnny’s beautiful hands. Poor thing, it must have been freezing! In most of the shots the milk was flying all over the place because of the wind, and we were working outside because it was too dark to shoot inside. Johnny is a star. Destined for great things, I’m sure. Canon 400D.

About This Painting / I used to travel on circuit throughout the central North Island of New Zealand, and the stretch of country from Rotorua through to Whakatane always fascinated me. Many times I managed to squeeze in a few minutes to sketch or take a photo. I never saw it looking like this – but that’s what’s called artist’s licence, isn’t it! Acrylic on canvas board. Thanksgiving time we usually see horns of plentys as centerpieces on the table. Thought I would do one with a different twist! Playing around with fractals and Redfield Plugins again! Used Incendia for the initial fractals, then Redfield’s Fractalius and Umatrix for some of the other effects. Happy Thanksgiving everyone! xx
