16×20 Oil on Canvas / This is an older work, around 2004 I believe. Its Main Street (Route 6) in a small mountain town in North Central PA, where my father was born and we still have family there. Most of the buildings are gone now, torn down this past year as part of the revitalization plan for Route 6, which is a very scenic road traveling in the mountains of Northern Pa. Figured since it no longer looks like this, I should put up the painting.

I did this “plein aire” on our screened patio, A sunny afternoon with one of my cats sleeping soundly after eating as much fresh catnip (growing from one of my pots) as he could. He wore himself out playing then caught a well deserved nap. I did this on watercolor canvas and sketched it on with fine pen to catch the detail then used my watercolors.

Because of policy that SOMEONE thought up in a moment of pure insanity, fully grown women (and children) HAVE to change from wet, sandy bathing suits into their street clothes outdoors, in full view of passersby. They are NOT ALLOWED to use the bathroom stalls for this purpose because the little dictators that run the place are in charge and will NOT LET YOU. It is a policy completely with out any merit as there are stalls enough to allow people to change clothes as well as void their bodies. (And if there are not stalls enough, MAKE SOME!) If you protest such a policy, you are told that you don’t HAVE to use the toilet. PLEEZE—can we get a grip…and change this???? The purpose of mounting this photo is PROTEST!!!

My son is lucky enough to live in Italy, he is with the Airforce. When ever we visit him I take my sketch book, write some notes, click a few pictures, and tackle it when I get home. When I paint it brings back memories of the laid back lifestyle, the friendlyness of the people, and the beauty and warmth of the small towns. Street Cafes are big in Europe, everyone goes to relax in the evening, see friends and catchup on news. That is what I tried to convey with this oil painting. I hope you can feel it as well.
