Before our President elect was official, the current administration reacted to the knowing that they were almost out of power, by enacting measures to take Wolves off the Endangered species list, allowing power plants to operate near national parks, loosen regulations for factory farm waste and make it easier for mountaintop coal-mining operations. / I am agitated by all these efforts, however my greater concern is for the WOLF, as it was nearly eradicated here in the 20th century, remarkably recovered by sincere and persistent efforts, only to be threatened once again by the powers-that-be… As the Mourning Moon rises, we give thoughts to brother Wolf / whilst a mighty pen has warranted their sudden deaths to engulf A totem called upon for protection and strength to be taught / is in need of our right actions, not just words – to be fought From each sacred direction the mighty wolf pack calls / for their survival, as others’ face extinction with their fall From the Northern lights an airborne shooting hunt ensues / upon Ice-leapers’ lair, so a governors’ ego does not bruise In the east, paper stained with crude oil and blood / seals Dawn-treaders fate with powers’ arrogant flood To the south ignorance is bliss, to simply remove / Sun-chaser to another place with hunting skills to prove In the west, talk is cheap as habitat quickly disappears / so the Night-stalker fades into the shadows of souvenirs A pack of human voices is needed now to howl / in this eleventh hour, working together – on the prowl. Hear my plea sweet angels mine, / Hear my plea my loves beyond time. I ask thee – my guardian – to spread thy wings, / I ask thee – while my soul gently for thee sings. My song of prayer shall fill the air, / My song shall remove my inner despair. Oh, my shelter – my home-bringing light, / can’t thou just lift me up in my darkest night? Can’t thou be me guidance through the far-away land, / may I stretch out my shivering hand? Comfort me – my angel – my love, / hear my plea and take me to my realm up above! Together we will celebrate and sing … / down on Earth the humans will say: ‘Listen … the angels sing!’ ** / This monument inspired me to write this poem. When I saw this prayer, written by an unknown author, at the Carmelite monastery where I do volunteer work, I knew I had to incorporate it into an image and offer its consoling words to those who are suffering from Alzheimer’s as well as to family, friends, and medical personnel who care for those afflicted with this disease. I chose an image of a cloud-filled sky as the sun was setting because those with Alzheimer’s are largely in the sunset of their lives and have to contend with many issues that cloud their lives. Prayer for an Alzheimer’s Sufferer Please grant my visitors tolerance for my confusion, / Forgiveness for my irrationality, / and the strength to walk with me / Into the mist of memory my world has become. Please let them take my hand and stay awhile / Even though I seem unaware of their presence. / Help them to know how their strength and loving care / Will drift slowly into the days to come / Just when I need it most. Let them know when I don’t recognize them / that I will . . . I will. / Keep their hearts free from sorrow for me / For my sorrow when it comes only lasts a moment – / then it’s gone. And finally please let them know / how very much their visits mean, / How, even through this relentless mystery, / I can still feel the love. Amen
