San Ignacio Lagoon is one of the best places in the world to see Gray whales and their calves up close. During the calving season you can go out into the lagoon in a small boat (called a panga), and after a short wait, the whale mum and calf will come up to you. They (mainly the calf) love to rub themselves against the boats and also to be scratched! You really get a close up look into their eyes! Then, just when you start to feel at one with each them, they blow salt water in your face and all over your camera! A second image of my daughter Sonya taken two years ago. Sonya was just playing with the splashes and it was very warm and sunny. Then, did not know a storm was approaching. In fact, storms are quite rare on the Black Sea mid- August, but on the next morning we were experiencing a Grade 6 tempset. What a great time I had capturing it all from every angle! By the way, tornados are quite frequent there, but late-August or in June. The place we stay almost every summer is not crowded and still wild and is about a two-hour train ride from Sochi and a five-minute ride from Tuapse.

My 2 boys playing in the warm Floridian waters near…kinda…Tampa. In DECEMBER!!! Having recently moved out of Alaska and before that Oregon. Playing in the water in December is just not done!
