RedBubble is very deliberately trying to cultivate a ‘play nice’ mentality. The reasoning behind this is that we want RedBubble to be an encouraging environment. As I wrote about a few days ago we think that everyone’s inherently creative and we want to foster an environment that draws out this creativity. And it’s working. We’ve received a number of e-mails from RedBubblers writing about how they have rediscovered their creative passion because of the interactions they have on RedBubble. Don’t underestimate the power of the positive comments you make! For those of you who want more than encouragement – fear not we have options for you – and there are more options to come. We have a critique forum that we’re encouraging people to use for constructive criticism. And we’re planning to build a ‘learning centre’ to help people to develop their creative skills. (Incidentally – the reason for separating out the critique forum from general comments on a work is that not everyone is ready for constructive criticism. We think exposure to criticism should be an opt in process – and must be quite carefully managed. Things can quickly get out of hand in interactions over the Internet – as we don’t have all the non-verbal cues that moderate our behaviour in face-to-face interactions. So criticism must be carefully managed). And finally, we think that creating a positive and encouraging environment in RedBubble doesn’t equate with accepting mediocrity or avoiding improvement. Rather we aim for RedBubble to be a place to encourage and inspire development. My first job after university was with the Army, where people would often be shouted into improvement – well let me just say that RedBubble is NOT like this! Everyone will develop / learn / change at their own pace – when they’re ready. As always – your comments and views are welcome … - Peter

  • I am hereby officially tendering my resignation
    by Robin Fortin IPA

I am hereby officially tendering my resignation as an adult….

I am hereby officially tendering my resignation as an adult. / I have decided I would like to accept the responsibilities of an 8-year-old again. I want to go to Mc Donald’s and think that it’s a four star restaurant. I want to sail sticks across a fresh mud puddle and make ripples with rocks. I want to think M&Ms are better than money because you can eat them. I want to lie under a big oak tree and run a lemonade stand with my friends on a hot summer day. / I want to return to a time when life was simple. When all you knew were colors, multiplication tables, and nursery rhymes, but that didn’t bother you, because you didn’t know what you didn’t know and you didn’t care. All you knew was to be happy because you were blissfully unaware of all the things that should make you worried or upset. I want to think the world is fair. That everyone is honest and good. I want to believe that anything is possible. / I want to be oblivious to the complexities of life and be overly excited by the little things again. I want to live simple again. I don’t want my day to consist of computer crashes, mountains of paperwork, depressing news, how to survive more days in the month than there is money in the bank, doctor bills, gossip, illness, and loss of loved ones. / I want to believe in the power of smiles, hugs, a kind word, truth, justice, peace, dreams, the imagination, mankind, and making angels in the snow. / So…here’s my checkbook and my car keys, my credit cards and all my responsibility. I am officially resigning from adulthood. / And if you want to discuss this further, you’ll have to catch me first, ‘cause, / “Tag! You’re it.” ~Author Unknown

One of the wonderful thing about Adobe Photoshop (and clones) is that you can add layers of textures over the image you are editing and adjust the opacity and blend mode to create wonderful textures, mood and story to your image. / / First convert the images that you wish to use as texture layers to Adobe Photoshop Files (.psd) either by using ‘File: Save As” and saving to your “Program Files>Adobe>Adobe Photoshop CS3>Presets>Textures” folder or move your .jpg images to the same folder and then do a batch conversion using “File>Scripts>Image Processor” and convert to .psd’s, selecting Textures as both the source and destination folder. Your textures can now be accessed using “Filters>Texture>Texturizer” and loading the textures you want by clicking the triangle. Another method is to open the image you wish to edit and then open the texture and copy and paste the image (Edit: select all) and paste it into the image you wish to texturise. Perhaps easier is using the ‘Place’ feature. File>Place and browse to find the layer you wish to place. Once done, you will see the image is a new layer over the old one and you can resize to fit the image as you wish. You can then change the blend mode as needed. For the example below I used Hard Light blend (default is Normal) and 50% opacity. —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-- / Before and after / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-— Some samples of my work edited with layers of textures by ghostbones / Resources: / Adobe Photoshop CS4 demo Ghostbones textures (now hosted via telzey’s flickr account with permission of ghostbones who has deleted his account Textures for Layers Flickr Pool More tutorials at my site / http://www.vanessapikerussell.com.au

Yes, I said it. The Please Play Nice Policy sucks. Do you know why it sucks? Because it seems like I always get stuck with the shit end of that stick. The commenter creates a new account, makes one comment (on my work) and then deletes the account before I can even finish reading what they wrote. Or it’s a relatively new account that has 0 art, 0 journals, 0 writing, 0 people on the watch list (unless it’s me), and they make one comment in 3 months – AND IT’S ON MY WORK. Hello? What kind of comments do they make you ask? It’s usually some unwarranted attack on the meaning of my work, which more often than not they don’t get in the first place. In the past I have suffered personal attacks. Report the comments you say? I do. What does RB do you inquire? I don’t know. I reported the last comment that one of my pieces is “highly offensive” and RB has not yet responded. I don’t expect anyone to respond either. So thank you for reading my little rant. And remember kids, Please Play Nice. Edit: I put a lot of my more controversial art on my Active Art Blog and I permit comments on my art and my writing.

We’ve been spending some time reflecting on how diverse the RedBubble community is. There are artists of all experience levels and from all walks of life sharing art which spans a colourful assortment of subject matter. How can we nurture an environment where, despite differences and disagreements, we are respectful and considerate of one another? In the past we’ve written epic posts about ‘playing nice’, itemising all the sorts of content and behavior that is not welcome on RedBubble. Not only is it unpleasant to read, it makes enforcing these rules time consuming and difficult. Time that could instead be dedicated to making RedBubble even better for you. So we’re taking a step back to look at the bigger picture. We’re all capable of being reasonable and considerate of one another, and common sense tells us when someone or something has ‘crossed the line’. It’s good to have a few firm rules – and these will still exist and be enforced. But by encouraging self moderation for the little details, we can all enjoy some more freedom to express ourselves. There will be times on RedBubble that you see things you do not like, or do not agree with. Instead of detailed rules and policies that consume lots of time and mental space, we are going to trial simpler content guidelines and an etiquette guide. If content or behavior can’t be resolved between those involved, we’ll review it, make a ‘common sense’ judgment and respond accordingly. This flexibility, gives everyone freedom grow and adapt. And means we focus on doing more of the good stuff. Jo

I absolutely had to share this email with everyone around here…. For your enjoyment! Washington Post’s Mensa Invitational A clever play on words in case you missed it. Here is the Washington Post’s Mensa Invitational which, once again, asked readers to take any word from the dictionary, alter it by adding, subtracting, or changing one letter, and supply a new definition. The winners are: 1. Cashtration (n.): The act of buying a house, which renders the subject financially impotent for an indefinite period of time. / 2. Ignoranus: A person who’s both stupid and an arsehole. / 3. Intaxication: Euphoria at getting a tax refund, which lasts until you realize it was your money to start with. / 4. Reintarnation: Coming back to life as a hillbilly. / 5. Bozone (n.): The substance surrounding stupid people that stops bright ideas from penetrating. The bozone layer, unfortunately, shows little sign of breaking down in the near future. / 6. Foreploy: Any misrepresentation about yourself for the purpose of getting lucky. / 7. Giraffiti: Vandalism spray-painted very, very high. / 8. Sarchasm: The gulf between the author of sarcastic wit and the person who doesn’t get it. / 9. Inoculatte: To take coffee intravenously when you are running late. / 10. Hipatitis: Terminal coolness. / 11. Osteopornosis: A degenerate disease. (This one got extra credit.) / 12. Karmageddon: It’s when everybody is sending off all these really bad vibes, and then the Earth explodes, and it’s a serious bummer. / 13. Decafalon (n.): The gruelling event of getting through the day consuming only things that are good for you. / 14. Glibido: All talk and no action. / 15. Dopeler effect: The tendency of stupid ideas to seem smarter when they come at you rapidly. / 16. Arachnoleptic fit (n.): The frantic dance performed just after you’ve accidentally walked through a spider web. / 17. Beelzebug (n.): Satan in the form of a mosquito, that gets into your bedroom at three in the morning and cannot be cast out. / 18. Caterpallor (n.): The colour you turn after finding half a worm in the fruit you’re eating. / / The Washington Post has also published the winning submissions to its yearly contest, in which readers are asked to supply alternate meanings for common words. And the winners are: 1. coffee (n.): the person upon whom one coughs. / 2. flabbergasted (adj.): appalled by discovering how much weight one has gained. / 3. abdicate (v.): to give up all hope of ever having a flat stomach. / 4. esplanade (v.): to attempt an explanation while drunk. / 5. willy-nilly (adj.): impotent. / 6. negligent (adj.): absentmindedly answering the door when wearing only a nightgown. / 7. lymph (v.): to walk with a lisp. / 8. gargoyle (n.): olive-flavoured mouthwash. / 9. flatulence (n.): emergency vehicle that picks up someone who has been run over by a steamroller. / 10. balderdash (n.): a rapidly receding hairline. / 11. testicle (n.): a humorous question on an exam. / 12. rectitude (n.): the formal, dignified bearing adopted by proctologists. / 13. pokemon (n.): a Rastafarian proctologist. / 14. oyster (n.): a person who sprinkles his conversation with Yiddishisms. / 15. Frisbeetarianism (n.): the belief that, after death, the soul flies up onto the roof and gets stuck there. / 16. circumvent (n.): an opening in the front of boxer shorts worn by Jewish men. So good!

What a weekend. yesterday spring had definitely sprung, temperatures rose to 20C and the sun shone all day. / I attended the dress rehearsal of a play I had written with a few friends-it is being performed tonight to the public :) It is only a short play but has all the components which add that sense of drama > a funeral, conflict, comedy, missing jewels and a secence; complete with thunder claps and spirit activity. It was so much fun writing it. Yesterday was also the day for setting up and hanging for an art exhibition I am part of. 16 South Island NZ Art Guild members are set to wow Cantabrians (people from the Canterbury region) with their eclectic collection of artworks in a first of a kind exhibition. “Common Ground” is showing from Monday 15th – 21st September 2008. / Mon – Sun 10am – 5pm / Opening Day – Artists in Residence – Monday 15th September. / Gallery “O” in the Christchurch Arts Center, Christchurch, New Zealand. / Level 1, Boulevard shops and galleries / Worchester Boulevard (stairwell adjacent to Coffee Corner) The Exhibition titled “Common Ground” will raise the bar for artists throughout New Zealand as this group of well known artists showcase their talents and make their original works available for sale to the general public. The public are invited to a unique opportunity to meet and watch the “Artists in Residence” who will be creating paintings onsite during the opening day celebrations, Monday September 15th. The Artists involved are excited to share this experience with everyone. All the participating artists – Amanda Hook, Anni Morris, Barb Warren, Chavah Kinloch, Cheryl Irwin, Elissa Ramsay, Janet Marshall, Jude Blake, Kirsty Black, Maria Hartley, Pam Buffery, Rachael Inch, Ron Esplin, Sharon Burger, Shelly Van Soest, Tanya Dann, Viv Hansen – are proud members of the NZ Art Guild. The NZ Art Guild is a nationwide organisation which is committed to promoting, supporting and providing resources and opportunities to all kiwi artists. I got a phone call last night to say I had sold a painting ‘The Sisters’ before it opened. It was totally unexpected, and a big suprise. A fellow artist had bought it. / Fingers crossed for lots of sales over the next week for all the artists involved. Oh…yes, the cheescake. I have a weakness for raspberries and made a raspberry cheesecale. The recipe is soooooooooo easy and definitely worth a go. End result is impressive and incredibly yummy so thought I would share the recipe here. So creative vibes to all and happy painting and eating ;) ~ Hugs Anni Raspberry Cheescake -Easy / Serves 8 / Prep 20 mins / Cook 40 mins / Ready in 1 hour Ingredients: * 8 digestive biscuits * 50g butter , melted * 600g cream cheese * 2 tbsp plain flour * 175g caster sugar * vanilla extract * 2 eggs , plus 1 yolk * 142ml pot soured cream Method 1. Heat the oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. Crush the biscuits in a food processor (or put in a plastic bag and bash with a rolling pin). Mix with the butter. Press into a 20cm springform tin and bake for 5 minutes, then cool. / 2. Beat the cream cheese with the flour, sugar, a few drops of vanilla, eggs, the yolk and soured cream until light and fluffy. Pour into the tin. Bake for 40 minutes and then check, it should be set but slightly wobbly in the centre. Leave in the tin to cool. Try – Put a handful of whole raspberries into the base before pouring over the cheese mixture. Mash and sieve a further 200g raspberries and drizzle 2 tbsp over the top, running a knife through any large blobs. Bake as before and serve the rest of the sauce on the side. Top the cheesecake with more fresh raspberries.

Do you ever enjoy your job so much that you feel guilty getting paid? I feel so damn lucky that I get to play with words all day. Sometimes, I catch sight of myself in a Collins Street shop window, stilettos and briefcase full of books, hair piled up and black secretary glasses, and think “I have a PAID reason to dance through dictionaries…..life is SWEET!” Today in class I fell in love with collective nouns…..the words for a group of animals. Did you know these terms? / a glaring of cats / a smack of jellyfish / an exaltation of larks / a quiver of cobras / a storytelling of ravens / and my personal favourite….a murder of crows Or how about the charming practicality of Tok Pisin in Papua New Guinea? / I laughed my arse off about the word for beard – try not to smile at mausgras explained as “mouth grass.” There was a rumour in my Linguistics class that the Tok Pisin word for helicopter was mixmaster bilong jesus. Say it out loud and try not to snort coffee out your nose when you understand. Finally, we discussed phobias, so of course I did some research as to the weird and wonderful range out there, but when I came to anatidaephobia I almost had to be resuscitated – I laughed so hard I frightened small children and think I cracked a rib (mine, not theirs). The fear that somewhere, somehow….a duck is watching you. What a GLORIOUS way to earn a living!

Folks, I’ve had a phone call from Joe Mortelliti’s wife, Marion Mortelliti, and she’s informed me of Joe’s current health situation. For those who don’t know, Joe Mortelliti is a RedBubble member whom was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia in March 2007. He underwent chemotherapy during 2007 which was reasonably successful, but his road to recovery has had its speed humps. Joe hasn’t t been firing on all cylinders of late. Marion informs he’s been diagnosed a diabetic, and is extremely likely to undergo a bone marrow transplant in the near future. His bone marrow donor is his brother. Unfortunately, Joe is coming out of remission and the need to tackle the situation head-on now presents itself. I’ve sent Joe a personal email wishing he and his family all the best for what lie directly ahead. I’ve sprinkled the message with a little humour, and made mention of babes (nurses) to him. :) You’re invited to add your best wishes here, and I’ll forward this journal to Joe’s personal email. Joe Mortelliti – August 2007 Previous writings by me about Joe during 2007; Please note: Not everything went according to script for Joe, and changes to his treatment were made by his doctors. Hence, some writing may conflict, but it was accurate at time of reporting. Joe Mortelliti – on track to recovery and bubbling along / It’s Friday and tomorrow is a big day. I’m coming Joe / The road ahead for Joe Mortelliti You’re invited to add your best wishes here, and I’ll forward this journal to Joe’s personal email.

Finally I got off my butt and decided to have a look at the design/layout options available for sprucing up the Profile Page (and others I guess). / I discovered a few neat tricks, thanks to all the helpful people who have blogged about this for the benefit of the rest of us, and applied a few. Take a look and let me know what you think. For me it was a little time consuming, mostly because I haven’t been tagging my images consistently from the beginning – so I had to go through them all and add tags pertinent to the categories I decided on. Once that was done however, the rest was easy. I just designed a few buttons, plugged in the code and Bob’s your Uncle! If you are looking for the code, just type “HOWTO” in the search box and check the helpful hints by Craig Shillington. From there you will find other useful links. There are still some limitations in the design rules in terms of layout but now that I’ve had a go I’ll see what else I can come up with. Cheers, / PhotoBloke™

This started out as a response to Mundy Hackett’s recent article on his Journal , but like always … it got a bit long! So whilst it was originally aimed at Mundy, I’ve slightly modified to be aimed at anyone facing the same concerns: Online popularity is near impossible when you consider the ever-changing face of the WWW with a million images, articles and myspace pages being uploaded every few seconds … I’d have thought you’d be too busy marketing, selling and enjoying your photography to have time to worry about commenting, reciprocal or otherwse! So it surprises me that this issue is of any concern to anyone at all. Redbubble serves as a great gallery for our REAL-WORLD friends, family, plus potential and repeat clients to see what we enjoy, love and have available for sale. As for commenting and reciprocation … they rarely, if ever, equate to dollars in the bank. Yes, the whole RB community is so overloaded that nobody can stay on the surface for too long without being drowned in the masses reaching up for their five seconds of fame. So be it. We enjoy photography, right? WE’re selling, right? WE’re still here, WE have an established face and name, and WE’re in for the long-haul. That’s what matters. You and Me. US. As long as the minority (who have talent, skill, tenacity, and a ongoing desire to become better) continue to present their BEST work, they will succeed in selling their artwork on RedBubble. Not just showing off their artwork, but presenting to their clients what makes them good and how they are improving. Isn’t this what we are aiming for? By presenting my response here, I realise I open this up for discussion. Play nice. Pretend Mundy is your next client. DISCLAIMER: / This article probably doesn’t say any more than what’s been said a million times before. Yeah, well, sometimes it helps to rant a bit. This has been my turn. NEXT!!

Hello :-) smiles happily Pretty much all of my time of late has been spent drawing… So much so I started to forget what sunlight looked like and dark shadows started to form under my eyes. Not a nice look… But! The weather here has been so beautiful, so warm and so alluring that I had to put my pencils down, put my trainers on and venture out into the woods. When i was a child i spent countless hours by myself playing around in the woods and streams… Amongst the trees i felt safe and strangely at home. I still love all things green and muddy so – i thought – why shouldn’t i play around in them now? I’m still a child at heart. And so… Amongst my drawings and writings and all things arty i’ve been enjoying tree climbing, stream jumping, shoe losing, t-shirt wetting, water splashing, muddy smelling madness. I know there is a lot of love for all things green and natural within our lovable redbubble community so i thought i would share some of my recent woodland adventures… Hurray for silliness! Oh… and this one below was me just after falling into the stream! I have seen some amazing trees, some were so incredible i will be using them as inspiration for a few new drawings. You know what would be wonderful? If this journal can inspire yourself to put on your wellys and go playing in a near by stream or randomly climb a tree. Maybe take your camera with you… You may just see something that inspires you to create your next masterpiece. Believe me… Its well worth it and it may just make you feel like a child again… Life’s far too short not to!

In this day and age, I think the world, not just the USA has been under so much stress, we tend to lose the way to finding peace amongst us. / Thanks to Marianne who turned me on to this interview by Bill Moyers with Mark Johnson. I have to agree with her, that no matter what your faith or beliefs are, music is universal, it soothes all, and it does bring a personal peace to us all. / When I watched this interview, and saw what Mark is doing a serious lump came to my throat and tears just flowed down my face. I wanted to share this with everyone, especially when tomorrow is the “big day” for change..not just for us in the USA, but for the world. We know everyone is watching and praying for our country, and I’d like to thank you all for it. We are in a mess here, seems we just cant seem to get along and find that peace anymore. / I like what this guy Mark had to say about his quest to have music playing around the world for peace. A pity he wasnt running for president. / In this interview, Bill will be commentating on how he came about meeting Mark, and then Mark’s video will play. I cant stress enough to watch this whole interview, it is well worth watching. / So here goes nothing for tomorrow, but for today, alittle peace made with music. / playing for change Thanks again to Marianne for bringing this very uplifting message my way. I do hope the rest of you enjoy it also.

Hey there, fellow RedBubblians… Once again I am browsing through hundreds of folios, numerous pictures, wonderful writings and great art… And over and over again I am thinking “How did they do that?” ... “What did they do to their cameras/pencils/papers/pens/canvas/lights/computers/add-form-of-art-here to get this effect?” ... “What the heck can I do to my own art to get better?” I love all your kind words on my photos, and pictures. In my very own portfolio, those are my best ones. Compared to your works I have seen, they are crap… I want to get better. I want to learn about lighting, ISO, Shutterspeeds, DOFs, etc. I want to know, what I can do with my pictures, in my situations when I shot them, to improve the effects, to get the pictures clearer, to just make them more beautiful and more on par with what I WANT them to be. / I can’t manage on my own. In thus, this is a plea to all RedBubblians out there, who can give advice and critique. When my pictures are really bad, tell me – but also tell me what I can do to make them better, so I can improve my works in themselves. / I do know, that some pictures, the quality itself is bad – the negative scans only are 72dpi on those that I shot with film. I couldn’t get bigger ones (the lab said, I don’t need bigger ones – I said I do, they said they won’t do it, since I am not a professional grinds teeth). I have a handful on there now, that I shot with a digicam as well. A friend of mine bought a new camera and gave me his Canon D10 to play around with. Good thing is, that all my Canon lenses fit on that one as well. / I won’t give up on film! I do like the excitement to wait for the results too much. But I also realize, in order to improve my film works, I need to improve my understanding. And with the trial and error, it is just cheaper using Digital (I spent a FORTUNE just for developing lately and the successrate to get nice pictures was horrible). But that’s just rambling. To get back to the point: Feel free to tear my pictures apart, tell me, what to do, what to change, how to snap, to snap better. Play Nice – Advice :c) Thanks all for reading and thanks even more for maybe even reacting. Best wishes from Vienna, Giovanna
