This elegant and very photogenic bird is common around the coast of Australia. It feeds by sweeping its spoon shaped bill from side to side whilst wading in the shallows of suitable bodies of water. This image is taken from an original painting by Colin Williams.
... When they are breeding, long white plumes grow from the back of their heads. The spatulate bill has many vibration detectors, called papillae, on the inside of the spoon, which means the bird can feel for prey items even in murky water and can feed by day or night. Once food is caught, it lifts its bill up and lets the items slide down its throat. It will bash shrimps against hard objects to remove their shells … Photographed at the wetlands, Cleland Wildlife Park, Mt Lofty Ranges, South Australia.

Try as I might I could not get close to this Royal Spoonbill (Platalea regia) for a close-up. His Body Guards (the Eastern Grey Kangaroos – (Macropus giganteus)) warned him even though I was sneaking through tick infested shoulder high grass in full chamo gear (Ghilly suit). Oh well now I have something to do again tomorrow!! PS I had origonally call the roos Macropus fuliginosus (which is the WESTERN Grey Kangaroo) Thank you tarnyacox, for pointing out my error!
