Sometimes the forest, when filled with the beautiful song of the black-capped chickadee (Poecile atricapillus), is like a grand concert hall. As the males partook in all kinds of boisterous activity, this female Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus) decided to observe the proceedings at a distance from the top of this Pacific crabapple tree. I like the idea of people out in their gardens talking to each other over the fence. Life in the slow lane, however those days seem to have come to an end and this garden needs some work.

The yellow Kangaroo Paw plant provides vibrant colour in the wild and the home garden. Fresh new bright green flower stalks are lined with red and finished with yellow flowers that when open display a pastel green inside. Attractive not only by itself but also in the birds that come to gather nectar from the freshly opened flowers.

Annually the spotted gum tree shreds its old bark replacing it with new a new layer. As this process evolves through the year the tree and forest landscape appears to change colours. The natural exhibition moves through shades of yellow as new bark through to red, gray, green and brown as old bark.
