Perfect reflections on the water drop on this really cool plant I have that grows pink leaves that deepen then darken to green! Seriously! I have no idea what it is called but it grows palm tree like and I have had it for five years.

I took this photo from the train window on the way from Guilin to Kunming in southern China. Kweichow province then (1982) was completely off limits to foriegners, as it was one of China’s poorest provinces. There is however a big difference between ‘poor’ and poverty, something I did not witness in post- Cultural Revolution China. One of the things that struck me about this scene and so many similar ones across southern China, apart from the magnificence of the limestone-dominated landscape, was the intensity of land use, with the village squashed into a tiny patch of rocky space unsuitable for agriculture. The industriousness of the Chinese is legendary, and it is no wonder China is becoming the powerhouse of the 21st Century.
