  • The ruins of the Redcliff Radar Station. All the buildings are now crumbling and in ruin. The station has been abandoned since 1961. Radar operators in the AC&W Squadron tracked the movements of aircraft sighted and passed speed, height and direction information to a Direction Centre (DC) and fighter interceptor squadrons. Fighter aircraft could be airborne in minutes after an alarm was given, and they closed in on unidentified planes by means of direction provided by the radar operators. Another of the Red Cliff functions was furnishing navigational aid to friendly aircraft operating in the area. Their detection of May-Day calls contributed to quick search and rescue efforts. / More in this series / / / / / / / / / / / / /

  • P-40 Flying Tiger Flying Tigers was the popular name of the 1st American Volunteer Group (AVG) of the Chinese Air Force in 1941 and 1942. In essence, the group was a private military contractor, although the volunteers have also been called mercenaries. They were former United States Army (USAAF), Navy (USN), and Marine Corps (USMC) pilots and ground crew, recruited under Presidential sanction and commanded by Claire Lee Chennault. The group consisted of three fighter squadrons. It trained in Burma before the American entry into World War II with the intention of defending China against Japanese forces. The Tigers’ shark-faced fighters remain among the most recognizable of any individual combat aircraft of World War II, and they demonstrated innovative tactical victories when the news in the U.S. was filled with little more than stories of defeat at the hands of the Japanese forces. The group first saw combat on 20 December 1941, 12 days after Pearl Harbor (local time). It achieved notable success during the lowest period of the war for U.S. and Allied Forces, giving hope to Americans that they would eventually succeed against the Japanese. The Tigers were credited with destroying almost 300 aircraft while losing only 14 pilots on combat missions. In July 1942, the AVG was replaced by the U.S. Army 23rd Fighter Group, which was later absorbed into the U.S. 14th Air Force with General Chennault as commander. The 23rd Group went on to achieve similar combat success, while retaining the nose art and nickname of the volunteer unit. • A digital photo montage that fictionally depicts the fight to defend Newcastle in the Second World War. Edited in Paint Shop Pro - / I selected the sky and deleted it and then imported the sky from another photo. I applied a filter effect to the building and imported the image of the airplane which had been removed from its background and scaled down. I duplicated the airplane and positioned the copy on a new layer. I applied a tinting layer to the whole image to soften the contrast between the sky, planes and building. The bunker photographed is located at Shepherds Hill in Newcastle. Newcastle was never invaded by the Japanese in WWII, but one of their submarines did fire all 34 of their shells on the 8th of June 1942. No one in Newcastle was injured and many shells that landed caused little damage and some did not even explode on impact. Fort Scratchley, a couple of miles north of Shepherds Hill fired 4 rounds back at the submarine.

  • A restored Vulcan Bomber being ‘escorted’ into the Dawlish Air Show, 20/08/09, by the Red Arrows Display Team. / This was the first time in 17 years that these aircraft have been seen together at a show. For those interested in the Vulcan, I will upload one of the craft on its own, and I will be adding a journal with a few more of the pictures on. / I will not bore you with lots of pics of the same craft. / Also, I probably will not be uploading any Red Arrows shots as there are enough already on RB. I used my Sigma 70-300 Lens for this capture. Hope you like it. / Thank you for looking. Best Viewed Large.
