  • Another one of the tiny waterfalls in the middle of a wonderfully noisy creek. This time, I approached the shot differently and took it with a specific edit in mind: black and white. The Nikon D80 will take the shot that way (or at least show it that way since the sensor can’t ‘not see’ colour) but I aimed for a high contrast image with the water flowing smoothly as much as possible. I opened PhotoShop Elements 3, did the enlargement, and turned the shot into true black and white, removing all other colours. But after a lot of fiddling around with contrast and light adjustments, it just didn’t have any character. I wasted another 30 minutes with various types of artistic edits before stumbling on one of the simplest: Gaussian Blur. That took all the over-processed look out of the piece and returned the character I was aiming for when I clicked the shutter release. The shot was taken on my stomach, using the rock to steady the camera for the slow shutter speed. I used the bracketing feature to find the manual settings closest to my goal, and then just started shooting. Over 50 shots were taken without moving one inch to either my left or my right, each with slightly different aspects since the water’s flow was never the same twice. Incidentally, there wasn’t much colour in the original view anyway because the tableau was mostly in shadow. Just for what Frank Zappa called “conceptual continuity”, I don’t think this wasn’t the time I fell off the cliff and broke ribs but it might be. The ribs healed (after getting re-broken sneezing, of all the ridiculous ways possible). The shot still looks best the smaller you see it. I don’t think that’s a good sign…
