  • The plains form a 2,000 metre high plateau and are covered by wild grassland and thick forest. This beautiful national park has an eerie silence to it and comes to a sudden end at Worlds End where the escarpment drops nearly 900 metres straight down. We left the guesthouse at 5.30am to begin our 11-hour hike. This mostly descending hike was torture on the knees and we were put to shame by local farmers who passed us with ease, barefoot and carrying heavy sacks of vegetables and other supplies to their village. A local village family kindly allowed us to rest our weary legs and eat our pack lunch in their one bedroom home. It was no trouble at all to clear out the one and only room for us strangers and make a fresh pot of tea.

  • Thingvellir (Parliament Plains) – the site of Iceland’s first National Assembly in 930. Lying in a rift valley it is bordered by Lake Thingvallavatn to the south and a mountain range to the north.

  • Dawn near Drouin in Victoria’s Gippsland while travelling to Mt Baw Baw and the snow. It had been better a few minutes before, but there was nowhere safe to pull off the Princes Highway to get shots. I pulled off the first possible place, which wasn’t ideal, but, as I always say, you take what you’re given. ;)

  • “Wallaces Hut and snow – Victorian High Country” Not far from Falls Creek is Wallace’s Hut – the oldest remaining cattlemen’s hut in the Victorian high country. Built in 1889 the hut is in fact celebrating 120 years this year. / It had been used by stockmen while moving cattle up to the high plains for grazing and then down again before the Winter snows. Autumn is a magical time to visit the high country and during our recent visit we managed to get to Wallace’s Hut. Due to recent snow falls we had to carefully pick our way up the walking track through a few patches of snow. On arrival we found the hut surrounded by beautiful twisting snow gums, colourful bark and sprinklings of snow. Very picturesque. Depending on conditions (ie outside of Winter or heavy snows), the hut can be reached by road a few kms from Falls Creek and then on foot (less than 1 km) from the Bogong High Plains Rd. More landscapes and scenics from me here
