  • Taken one evening going home with storm clouds in the distance at Piper’s River in Northern Tasmania, on the wine route. This was a hill I was wanting to capture, but needed the right light. This day the light was perfect. Since I took this, one of the trees have fallen and has become firewood. The scene is no longer like this. Although the soil is still red.

  • This interesting life-size metal piper can be found at Kenmore Village in the Breadalbane region of Highland Perthshire (Breadalbane means “Highland Scotland” in Gaelic). Non Scots always seem interested in what is worn under the kilt, but as any true Scotsman will tell you, nothing is worn under the kilt, it is all in perfect working order!! Three bracketed JPGs converted to HDR in Photomatix. Camera: Canon EOS 450D BEST VIEWED LARGER Related shots can be found at: Highland Scotland.

  • In 1284, while the town of Hamelin was suffering from a rat infestation, a man dressed in pie1 appeared, claiming to be a rat-catcher. He promised the townsmen a solution for their problem with the rats. The townsmen in turn promised to pay him for the removal of the rats. The man accepted, and thus played a musical pipe to lure the rats with a song into the Weser River, where all of them drowned. Despite his success, the people reneged on their promise and refused to pay the rat-catcher. The man left the town angrily, but returned some time later, seeking revenge. On Saint John and Paul’s day while the inhabitants were in church, he played his pipe yet again, this time attracting the children of Hamelin. One hundred and thirty boys and girls followed him out of the town, where they were lured into a cave and never seen again. Depending on the version, at most two children remained behind (one of whom was lame and could not follow quickly enough, the other one was deaf and followed the other children out of curiosity) who informed the villagers of what had happened when they came out of the church. Other versions (but not the traditional ones) claim that the Piper lured the children into the river and let them drown like the rats or led the children to a cave on Köppen Hill or Koppelberg Hill. Another version is that the Pied Piper hypnotized the children into following him the the top of Koppelberg Hill were he took them to a mystery land2 (outside of Hamelin) or a place called Koppenberg Mountain3 and returned them after payment or that he returned the children after the villagers paid several times the original amount of gold. for more info Wikipedia

  • After spending the morning at Monomoy NWR, I went to my favorite salt marsh in Chatham to look for some afternoon migrants. This is a pair of greater yellowlegs in flight over the marsh. The greater yellowlegs forages in salt marshes, tidal pools and the ocean tide line. Using their bill to stir up the water, they eat little fish, as well as small crabs, shrimp and marine worms. Although the species doesn’t breed on Cape Cod, they are routinely seen during migration.
