  • This is one of the main temples in Vang Vien, Laos. The temple buildings are beautifully ornate and the surrounding garden is peaceful. On this day however, a number of the monks were busy conducting repairs on the building and, the younger ones especially, were scouting in and out of the windows and up and down the ladder as part of their work. They held a group of us captivated, cameras in hand, with their cheeky expression and playful teasing. I loved the strong contrast of the orange robe against the pink building – I think the colours capture the playfulness of the atmosphere even more than the monk’s expression in this case.

  • too much paperwork? / something amusing for those in the midst of exam =P

  • The complete and real title is : “Poupée – InnerSelf”. I asked to myself : Stars… They bright the sky, our eyes, our mind & soul. They are inside of us. We always look for them, for these glimpses of lights and happiness. / Do we really know ourselves? / Do we realize that we have all of this inside of us? / What are we in fact? / As we don’t really look in the correct place, we don’t really know ourselves i decided to ‘almost’ delete the face. • Most know of Pakistan as a third world fanatical Muslim country full of terrorists. I have lived in Pakistan, my parents were born and raised there and though it has its many faults it also has its many beauties, its many treasures and many things that I love and cherish. At Work is a picture of my maid, Sakina in her small and modest home where I captured her hands as she used two rocks to grind herbs and spices to make that nights meal. This is a method still used in homes where a mechanical grinder is a luxury and not a necessity. According to Sakina and her mother, herbs ground on a rock maintain the rich flavors that are often lost by all our machines.

  • Firewood for tonight by flyingdocphotos. / Village woman from Bromo, East Java Indonesia. This image was taken in a small village on the outskirts of the Bromo caldera volcanic region of eastern Java, Indonesia. I was playing around with my 100mm macro lens, capturing some spider pictures then this lady appeared down the trail, emerging from the fog. I stood at the side of the road, smilied and raised my camera as she drew close. As she saw me, she smiled, nodded back, posed and I took a snap. Then (I think she thought I was going to take only one photo) she started walking along again, focusing on the uphill path in front of her – and that’s when I clicked my shutter again, capturing this image.

  • Mixed mediums: Acrylic, rice paper, linen thread, pigment powder on canvas. / Size: 613×917 x 42 mm; Framed size: 970×665 x 50 mm Concept: Practically stitches bind, attach, and connect materials and/or surfaces together and is a metaphor for human bonding. The stitch becomes the ‘thread’, linking and connecting to the human psyche. Using a needle and thread by hand to stitch is a slow, methodical and sometimes painful process, of pushing and pulling through materials. The process reveals the two sides (dual nature) and the in-between to this affair. / / Abstractly worked, the stitch is used metaphorically for relaying energies and relationship formations. / Spirit Matter Cosmos abstractly references and resonates concepts of duality, the conscious and unconscious, complexity and simplicity, the spirit and alchemy of ‘relationships’ (blood & gold symbolism), transitory formations (the faded) illusions to connections and perceived realities. Always within, is the ‘spirit’, the centre, a voice of wisdom that guides and directs us in and through and beyond the ‘matter’.
