This was just a lucky catch. My wife got some tulips for her birthday and I took one out as the sun was setting to try a get a nice shot. I put the vase down & as soon as I turned my back I heard the hummer behind me, I turned back around and had time to get off one shot before she realized she wasn’t interested in tulips. / Captured in Cave Creek, Arizona, with a Canon 20D. I was on the dock waiting for a sunset when it started to rain, when i turned to leave this pink rainbow was behind me.
The Chaffinch is one of my favourite garden birds. They are colourful, cheeky and have a lovely warbling song that always puts me in mind of springtime. This little fella, photographed in our “white out” the other day, looks to be a youngster as the top of his head is not the typical pure grey. If there are any birdie experts out there who could clarify this, I would be much obliged! Canon EOS 50D with Canon EOS 400mm L f/5.6 handheld
Another shot from my recent family holiday to Lake Tyers with my new 5DmkII. The light was amazing and now that I’m shooting digital I was experimenting more with filters and bracketing with my fav being this stop under with a full length 3 stop neutral density graduated filter. Now that I’ve shot a few frames to be honest I’m not seeing digital as a step up colour wise compared to my old Velvia shots with these sort of sunset shots (outside of the orange sunset it seems a bit colourless and grey too me). For waterfall, low light and wildlife it leaves Velvia for dead but I think Velvia will still have a place in my arsenal in certain situations. Camera: Canon EOS 5D mkII / Lens: EF 24-70 f/2.8 USM @ 27mm / Filter: Cokin 121F, 3 stop full length neutral density graduated filter / ISO: 100 / Shutter Speed: 1.3sec / Aperture: f/22 / WB: Auto / Exposure Compensation: -1 stop / Post production: none For other shots from this area check out my Gippsland gallery. 10% of all profits go to the Wilderness Society
Caribbean Flamingo (phoenicopterus ruber) having a jolly good splash! He was a bit of a pain as he kept sticking his head under the water (not very elegant) but obviously enough snaps paid off. Birdworld, Surrey, England – 15 April 2009. Canon EOS 5D MkII with Canon EF 70-200mm L IS f/4 handheld

A shot from my recent family holiday to Lake Tyers with my new 5DmkII. Unfortunately a computer virus is giving me hell at the moment and it was re-imaged a few days ago and I’m waiting until next Monday to get CS4 installed so until then it’s jpeg’s straight from the camera (I’ll process the RAW’s next week). Yes it was an amazing night. I took a few of this exact shot at ISO 100 bracketed with long exposures but after these shots a bird flew into the frame and I grabbed 4 more as it flew across at 1600 ISO and very shallow depth of field but these turned out to be my fav’s (best viewed large to see the birdy).Only wish I remembered to take my old film camera to take a few Velvia shots to compare, but I forgot. I left after putting the kids to bed and at the time the light wasn’t looking in any way like it would shape up to anything special… Camera: Canon EOS 5D mkII / Lens: EF 24-70 f/2.8 USM @ 42mm / Filter: UV / ISO: 1600 / Shutter Speed: 1/250thsec / Aperture: f/2.8 / WB: Auto / Exposure Compensation: -1/3rd / Post production: none For other shots from this area check out my Gippsland gallery. 10% of all profits go to the Wilderness Society
