ACEO size, 2 1/2” x 3 1/2” Winsor & Newton Artist Watercolor on 140lb watercolor paper. Three pinkish saucer magnolia blossoms in increasing bloom stages grow from a crooked brown twig with little spring green leaves showing, exactly as they do on the KU campus in Lawrence, Kansas. These are the smaller saucer magnolias found in the North and Midwest, not the giant white Southern magnolias of New Orleans. The color of the blossoms is mixed with Burnt Sienna and a little Winsor Red as they were not a clear bright pink but a soft brownish pink. Painted at the same time as Two Magnolia Blossoms on the same paper, a Canson Montval cold press watercolor block.

Dianthus is a genus of about 300 species of flowering plants in the family Caryophyllaceae, native mainly to Europe and Asia, with a few species extending south to north Africa, and one species in arctic North America. Common names include carnation, pink and sweet william. The name Dianthus is from the Greek words dios (‘god’) and anthos (‘flower’), and was cited by the Greek botanist Theophrastus. / [From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia] Original photograph taken on the slopes of Monte Stivo: Lighter version: Also available as a card/wall art:
