As dawn breaks on a low tide revealing an incredible array of tidal sand patterns. Pouring rain forced us off the beach at Direction Island and into the shelter of the forest. Our senses were buzzing with the sound of rain and waves, the rich saturated colours and the scent of summer rain. / Direction Island is a much-loved anchorage for yachties, cocos locals and visitors, but no one lives there permanently. / “Hibiscus Morning” is part of the Tropics Collection...mornings on the island, the Hibiscus opens early…breakfast on the terrace with the warmth of the sun, feels so luxurious with all the blossoms cascading down, in their multitudinous shades of brilliant colour ... Watercolour on Arches Hot Pressed Paper… Sequestered in their wiry pods, / the hibiscus opened last night after a long silence. / While we mimicked stones in our shared bed, / the big lusty blooms burst into being, / half-human and full as the moon. Rota Island – August 2009 / straight out of the camera / Life on this island is friendly and unhurried and the hospitality is as unforgettable as the magical sunsets. Rota Island is a natural playground with around 3000 inhabitants and is known by many to be Micronesia’s best-kept secret / Rota (Chamoru: Luta) also known as the “peaceful island”, is the southernmost island of the United States Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) and the second southernmost of the Marianas Archipelago. It lies approximately 40 miles north-northeast of the United States territory of Guam. Songsong village is the largest and most populated followed by Sinapalo village (Sinapalu). In 1521, the first European to see Rota, was the lookout on Magellan’s ship Victoria, Lope Navarro. However, Magellan’s Armada of three ships didn’t stop until they reached Guam, so the first European to arrive in Rota (in 1524), was Spanish navigator Juan Sebastian Elcano, who annexed it together with the rest of the Marianas Archipelago on behalf of the Crown of Spain.
