Early Morning light skips across the clouds hanging in the valley as a few of the tallest firs and pines poke through the clouds.
After our early morning photo shoot out at Bilgola Beach, my mate and I decided to stop at neighbouring Newport for a coffee. We failed to find a coffee place open at this time so instead we wondered around with our cameras to see what we could find. A glorious morning such as this was being enjoyed by the locals….one local in particular decided to have his breakfast overlooking the magnificent Newport beach and in between two grand Norfolk Pines…. Wow, it was a wonderful winter wonderland today, over 8 inches actually. This is the scene in my front garden, that lamp sticks up out of a huge Juniper bush I’ve got growing there, but as you can see it’s just covered in snow. ;-) I love winter. This is a 3 layer HDR with added moon. The light is natural, I just switched on the garden lamp prior to shooting the photo. Snow was falling as I shot this and some other ones like it, I held a brolly over my camera and tripod! / Woohoo…winter is here!!
These pretty little Pine Grossbeaks are very flighty when it comes to getting their picture. Catch them at the seeds, and you could be lucky as I was today. Photo taken in my yard with my new Canon 50D and Sigma Zoom 150-500 Zoom lens. Seen on the 1986 Series $1000 Canadian dollar bill. (something I have never seen in my life!) Pine Grosbeak: Large, robust finch with red-washed black back, gray sides and undertail coverts, and pink-red rump and underparts. Head and face are pink-red; bill is heavy and black. Wings are black with two pale bars. Tail is black and slightly notched. Feeds on seeds, buds, fruits and insects Breeds from Alaska east to Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, and south in the western mountains to California and Arizona. Spends winters south to the Dakotas and New York but may go farther south to southern Canada and northern United States. Prefers open coniferous forests and forest edges. Winters in mixed coniferous-deciduous forests; also found in shade trees in villages and in suburbs where it looks for food. / (www.whatbird.com) / / Laminated Print
I was just fooling around with my macro lens and a pine tree in the fall. I came up with this abstract of the needles, with minor levels adjustments in photo shop. Dryden, Ontario, Canada. Olympus E-410, 50mm F2.0 macro. Group Feature: / Ontario – December 19, 2009 /
Fall colors had just reached their peak and there was a chill in the damp air, but the view was a pure delight. This photo was taken with a Canon EOS 10D with a Canon EF 70-210mm f/4 telephoto lens at 200mm. The shutter speed was 1/20th sec at f/13. The camera’s ISO was set to 400. A Manfrotto tripod was used with a remote shutter release. Your comments are always welcome! a pretty female cardinal looks skyward for that worrisome hawk that thinks my feeder stations are his personal smorgasboard. But, it does make her look so cute. I love the female cardinals in the winter time, I think they are just as photogenic as the male cardinal.

a brilliant male cardinal braves the winter snow storm, as he sits on a snow covered pine branch. Cardinals are quite tough creatures, and seem to reliush the snow. There is always a flurry of activity aroiund the sunflower seed feeder during a snowy period. It was snowing heavily on the day I took this photo (12-6-09), in fact, we got about twenty six inches, a hefty amount for us.
