I uploaded this for for Helen Bascom, as I was totally amazed to see she has a piece in her portfolio that is very similar. I took this shot on Nov. 11.2007, Remembrance day at Lions Park in Kelowna, and at that time had not seen the photo Helen has in her portfolio so you can imagine my surprise when I came across it today while surfing the bubble. What a coincedence!

This was taken when we lived in Arkansas. That year for Christmas, my little nephew made his own version of a birdfeeder and gifted it to us….he spread peanut butter on this pinecone and then rolled it in birdseed….We, in turn, gifted it to the many birds who came to visit us on a daily basis….the loved it! :-)

At the foot of Bear River Falls, I was setting up the gear after taking it all out of my backpack so take “slow shutter” water shots when I dropped something, probably a lens cap. When I bent over to retrieve it, I saw a speck of white that reminded me of another photoshoot a while back. Down on my knees in the wet loam I saw a pinecone no more than 1/2 long with the tiniest mushroom imaginable on it! I immediately went into macro mode and forgot all about the roaring falls behind me. It was a nightmare getting this shot because of the dim lighting and the lack of a flash in the macro mode on my Olympus. But once it was captured and I saw it at home, I was enthralled with the incredibly tiny beauty of God’s Works. If the lens cap had landed on this, it would have crushed it and covered it forever.

When approached, Shinglebacks open their mouths and act big and tough! Although dont be fooled, when do they bite, they latch on very hard! This pair was found wandering the bluebush near Lake Mungo in western NSW.

Shampoo Ginger or Pine Cone Ginger (Zingiber zerumbet ) grows to about 7 ft (2.1 m) tall with long narrow leaves arranged oppositely along the stem. In mid to late summer, separate stalks grow out of the ground with green cone-shaped bracts that resemble pinecones. The green cone turns red over a couple of weeks and then small creamy yellow flowers appear on the cone. In some locales this plant is known as the “pine cone ginger”, but it is most widely known as the “shampoo ginger” for the creamy liquid substance in the cones. Flecker Botanic Gardens, Cairns, North Queensland.
