  • In honor of my Scandinavian heritage. Grandmother Anna was a proud Norwegian.transplant, and I am the daughter of a daughter of a seamstress. Grandmother Anna Lorraine Mortensen at the age of 19 came to America in the year 1900 from Norway via Ireland. She was an indentured servant for a number of unspoken years. She was a seamstress. Yes, I know how to sew a straight line. And have spent many fastidious hours for the sake of the ideal seam. Although I can not remember which magazine I found this image from, this color pencil drawing was inspired from a photo I found in a design periodical.

  • Scabious is much too ugly a name for this delightful bloom (scabiosa) otherwise know as the pincushion flower. It’s a wonderfully long flowering perennial and older varieties have a gorgeous delicate fragrance. This particular plant is (even) older than me (! ? !) and has been carefully tended by my dad for decades as it came (via a removal van) from the house I was born in. Captured during a recent shower Its lovely scent is a great reminder of summers past. . . :))) Greenery is from a nearby heather and this was taken in the same rain as summer shower so it was well worth getting slightly damp! ;))

  • It’s a photo! lol lol lol No, really, it’s a digital painting/ portrait of my darling co-host of the same name! Same as the painting, not same as me. lol

  • Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery Pincushion Protea ============================================= / Featured in Top 10 of Proteas_and_Friends Challenge How_Close_Can_You_Get – May 2009. ============================================= / Leucospermum cordifolium belongs to the protea family and is indigenous to South Africa. All members of the Protea family are woody shrubs or trees. The leaves are hard and leathery (sclerophyllous). The worldwide popularity of the Proteas has resulted in many hybrids and cultivars being produced to supply the cut-flower market. Most are grown in nurseries in Israel, California and Australia.

  • My eye went straight to this partial bloom. The “cushion” exposed now that the delicate petals have fallen off. / Pincushion flower or Scabiosa (named after its herbal use of curing itching) is a family that includes both annual and perennial flowers. Yes that’s right! The description not as pretty as the flower! LOL / /

  • I found this unusual tree over the back fence of my work-place today. I am hoping someone can help me out with what it is. It appears to be a Native of sorts – and has such a stunning coloured flower. It was too high for me to reach up and pick a flower off – I had to zoom. Anyway, tomorrow I will approach the owners and ask for a branch. / /

  • Featured in Proteas, Leucadendron, Leucospermum, Orothamnus & Serruria – June 6th, 2009 Pincushions (Leucospermum Species), pincushion proteas resemble varicolored sea urchins with curved spines, or the burst of fireworks. There are several species and cultivars of pincushion that range in color from pink to orange and gold. / This South African plant is adapted to the cool and dry higher elevations of Hawai’i, where one bush can produce over 1,000 flowerheads in a season. / Photographed on Maui, Hawaii

  • ‘BUTTERFLY BLUE’ PINCUSHION PLANT / Best viewed large. / / The ‘Butterfly Blue’ Pincushion plant is a beautiful compact perennial which will grow 12”-15” in average, well-drained soil, in full sun. Butterflies love the Pincushion, which tolerates partial shade, particularly in the hot summer climates of the deep South. However, for best growing success, this perennial prefers light soils with neutral pH. / / The ‘Butterfly Blue’ Pincushion plant blooms in the Spring from late April until the first frost. Striking flowers (2” diameter) feature an outer ring of frilly, flat, lavender-blue petals and a paler domed center cushion. / / The center cushion, a shade lighter than the flowers it produces, develops protruding stamens that resemble pins in a pincushion. ‘Butterfly Blue’ Pincushions are excellent plants for grouping in border fronts and rock gardens, and can be used as a brilliant edging. / / These attractive ‘Butterfly Blues’ are even more stunning when combined with the pink-flowered companion plant ‘Pink Mist’ Pincushion. Flowers bloom singly on stiff stems that have grayish-green basal leaves. Remove spent flowers to encourage additional blooms. / / This macro shot was captured with my Canon EOS 40 D camera, with use of my Canon – 75-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Telephoto Zoom Lens. / “BUTTERFLY BLUE” was awarded the prestigious title of “PERENNIAL PLANT OF THE YEAR 2000” by the noted PERENNIAL PLANT ASSOCIATION / / For further review, go to BUTTERFLY PINCUSHION

  • Desert Grace, a watercolor painting, is part of the Desert Life series painted by artist Joy Skinner. This lovely cactus bloom comes from the pin cushion cactus found in the southwest. When this cactus blooms in the spring, it is literally covered with this vibrant flowers, bringing life to an otherwise drab desert. The original is 22×22” and was painted on 140 lb Arches watercolor paper. It is available for sale by contacting the artist.
