In the North of the Pilbara of Western Australia a timeless landscape simmers in the unbearable heat, line after unending line of ridges marching across the Earth’s surface… / Some of the ridges are closer together, some have joined together, wavy lines of rock and sand become one for short distances…it is in these places where the ribs of the Earth come together that water can collect and exist for a while, and where the vegetation can thrive…eucalypts, acacias and desert scrub crowd together in an effort to survive, like so many pub patrons on a hot Sunday afternoon / Outside, in the flat baking valleys only the toughest live on, determined, grim and unbowed as were the first explorers and settlers of this most beautiful of hells… / Life is hard in my Country / But Death is not an option 60×60 cm / Acrylic & inks on stretched canvas / Original for sale, my own ribs are showing, man! Rock engravings (petroglyphs) occur at countless sites over a wide area in the Pilbara region, with a variety of styles and subjects. The engraved motifs generally depict fauna, animal tracks and abstract symbols. Pilbara Petroglyphs are considered the earliest example of art in Australia. My field assistant and I stumbled upon these ones while mapping in an area near Wodgina Station. We suddenly felt like very new arrivals in this ancient landscape…

Marble Bar is situated 218 kilometres southeast of Port Hedland, Western Australia, and is renowned as the hottest town in Australia, due to the record heat wave of 1923/24. The Guinness Book of Records lists the highest maximum to have been reached in Marble Bar as 49.2 degrees C. The town was called Marble Bar after a stunning formation of jasper which settlers mistook for a huge bar of marble. Marble Bar had a population of over 5,000 after gold was found nearby in 1891, but today the town has about 410 inhabitants. However, it continues to be a very productive centre, with gold, tin, silver, lead, zinc, copper and jade deposits being mined. Marble Bar is a very historic town, with many old buildings and remnants of the past. The Government Buildings built in 1896 cost 7949 pounds, 11 shillings and two pence to complete. Comet Gold Mine and the Corunna Downs Airbase were one of the best kept secrets of World War II.

I can’t believe how much I got in with this Panorama shot!!! The File I uploaded for this is 14587×3048 pixels and is very detailed when viewed full size. The only way I could think of to show the detail in this is to show you a full size sample. The whitish square in the thumb below is roughly the detailed view below that. :)

A view of the Pilbara landscape from the air. The colour of the earth is amazing. The textures of the land brought out by the morning light had me captivated staring out of the window.

Kalimina Gorge / Karijini National Park-Western Australia On one of my walks through Kalimina gorge I came across this gorgeous little cascade. The coloured rock of the gorge walls lit up in the afternoon light created the most wonderful reflections in the water.
