  • I took this photo at home of my son painting Tigger. I mainly concentrated on getting him to keep the brush still for me on his way to the paper! / This macro work is untouched (don’t ask how many shots it took to get this!!)

  • Red pigment; rice-paper referencing the ephemeral, Jurassic sand and oil-paints. / This is one of the completed pieces for the Redcliffe exhibition. / I so loved the idea of using Jurassic sand since it references a timeless enduring quality of Earth, even if us humans won’t endure because of our own careless ignorance. / This is my experience of being surrounded in the ‘mindfulness’ of a forest – a meditation in light and colour fragments. The essential experience of relatedness with nature and its restorative qualities. / On canvas: 1200mmX 900mm.

  • Staying in the desert near a Aboriginal sacred site, I left this piece of water-colour paper buried in the earth of the ceremonial ground overnight on a dark moon. / The next day I retrieved it and allowed the energy of the mud and a moment of mysticism to direct the paint and script.

  • This is an original IR image that I printed with inkjet pigment ink (CMY colors) and then printed the K channel as a palladium negative layer. This is my first experiment in this process. I am using information from Dan Burkholder and Ron Reeder in trying to figure this out. First, the Epson Ultrachrome inks do work and do not wash away when you print with the palladium sensitizer and then wash the image in the darkroom. I think I learned a lot about printing the inkjet portion and want to go back and work on that. I think I will print in much the same way that I normally do on fine art papers. I think this will vary the color and get closer to what I am after. More work to do. Canon EOS 30D, Infrared-ONLY / Images are copyright Rene Hales and may not be used without permission.

  • Thru the window of an art supplies store in Venice – these are pigments to be used making paint. The colours were amazing, I wish I could have gone inside and shot more of this scene but the store was closing.

  • Lichens are composite organisms consisting of a symbiotic association of a fungus with a photosynthetic partner. Lichens have been used in making dyes and perfumes, as well as in traditional medicines. Add today’s use as art element. Here the natural mineral elements and lichens are in and on the rock host. These colors are all extracted in place from the already colorful but subdued shades visible to the naked eye. For our pleasure!
