The Grand Guignol operated in Paris from 1897 – 1962. Their specialty was a series of short one-acts presented in the “Dutch shower” style of alternating sex farces with hardcore horror and shock shows bearing sensational titles such as Orgy in the Lighthouse, Crimes in a Madhouse, The Torture Garden, and The Kiss of Blood. The theater itself was once a chapel and part of a larger church/convent that burned to the ground. A very small and intimate venue, the novelty of making one’s way through district of thugs, pimps, pick-pockets and whores to see a show of such a contrastingly adult nature in a space decorated with non-secular imagery of religious-themed murals, wooden angels and cherubs was too much to resist. Confessionals were converted to theater boxes where so-desiring patrons could “enjoy” the show in their own private manner…
