Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery Eastern Water Dragon (Physignathus lesueurii) Class: Reptilia Family: Agamidae World-wide, around 350 species are recognised currently in the family Agamidae. Of these, 72 species in 14 genera occur in Australia. Australian agamids are small to moderate-sized lizards. The Water Dragon is Australia’s largest agamid lizard. Water Dragons belong to the genus Physignathus. This genus has only two species world-wide. The eastern water dragon grows to around 80-90cm in length, much of which is tail. Their colour consists of shades of grey or brown with a series of black bands on the back and tail and a black stripe on the side of the head behind the eye. The underside is creamy-white, although males may have a vivid red on some or most of the belly and chest. There are enlarged scales forming a crest down the middle of the head, back and tail. The legs are relatively long and powerful and the strong tail is flattened on the sides to assist with swimming.

Nikon D300, Nikkor 200mm f/4D, monopod ISO200, 1/125s, f/10 I see this guy nearly every day while we walk the dogs. Today I had the camera and new 200mm lens with me and managed to get a couple of shots. The light was not helpful but I managed to salvage this shot.

Eastern Water Dragon – Physignathus lesueurii. Australia Zoo, Queensland, Australia
Over the last few days I’ve been at a music camp in Mt Evelyn called Oasis and the owner of the camp has a little reptile house he keeps as a hobby/ attraction for the camp. He is obviously very passionate about his little beauties and this afternoon he very obligingly allowed me to take some pics of his critters. John was a great, helping to pose the animals and going out of his way to help me get good shots an amazing experience I was priviledged to experience. Camera: Canon EOS 5D mkII / Lens: EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM with a 24mm extension tube @ 70mm / Filter: UV / ISO: 1000 / Shutter Speed: 1/2 sec / Aperture: f/13 / WB: Auto / When: 6:07pm on 20/5/09 For more pics from this area check out my Yarra Ranges gallery. 10% of all profits go to the Wilderness Society
Another Water Dragon, This one near Brisbane. These all the guys up here seemed to have more definite neck markings than the locals between Sydney and Coffs. Interesting.
