Since our dawn, man has always looked to the stars to make sense of the chaos that we create. And to me, it only seems fitting that our future should lie beyond our own planet, if we don’t mess it all up first. The main tone underlying this work is that we should look at our history in order to understand our future – and I’ve used the Mayans as a reference to the good and bad things that we have achieved. I’d like to think that this being dominating the artwork could very well be us, in our own creation of what we believe as interstellar beings. Kind of like life imitating art. The dome of his head is actually Mars, a planet many have speculated that could be an older version of our own Earth and a glimpse into our future. Behind the his head, and also tattooed on his brow, is part of the very advanced Mayan long-count calendar, which runs out on the 22nd December 2012 – a date that many historians are looking forward to, especially given today’s fragile climate. Some speculate that it could mark an approximate date to the end of life as we know it. Which ties in with other totally unrelated theories about our oil crisis, global warming, and so on. / In his eyes, he sees a horizon of fire which symbolizes the earth cleansing itself, although we’d see it as mass destruction. This is synonomous with our understanding of the Mayan civilization and how it overpopulated and crumbled under the high demand of such an over-indulgent society. The moon shots are from the recent lunar eclipse. I included this because the moon plays such an important part in our life, and the stabalisation of the planet – it moves away from the Earth at just under 4cm each year. Finally, I’ve used the Mayan Chichen Itza temple at the bottom of the piece as a stairway to the heavens, common with Mayan, Egyptian, and other beliefs.

930 views as of Nov. 13, 2009 Featured in The Birds – Feb. 15, 2009 / I can almost feel it. Spring is JUST around the corner. It’s such an exciting time in Canada after a long and cold winter. The lilac trees bloom putting forth the sweetest scent and the hummingbirds return to our property after a long migration. Yes, Spring will be here before we know it. I can’t wait! I spent countless HOURS last summer, sitting in a lawn chair, ever so patiently waiting to try & capture one of these little darlings in flight. They are only 7-9 cm long. While hovering their wings beat 55x/s, 61x/s when moving backwards, and at least 75x/s when moving forward! / / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—— / Processing info: / This image started out with 3 photograph layers (the lilac background image, a female ruby-throated hummingbird, and the tail from a different photo of the same bird). I took all of the original images with my Canon DSLR. After removing the background around the original bird photos I merged all of the layers in PhotoShop. I digitally painted/blended the entire image in Corel Painter X using the Impasto Depth Smear brush at 30% opacity. I cloned out a distracting branch in the upper left corner and performed blend # 2 work on the main lilac blooms, hummingbird, and the largest leaves using grainy blender 10 brush at 38% opacity. / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—- / Bird Gallery / ADD RENEE TO YOUR WATCHLIST

I can’t remember where I first saw this tutorial, but its been around for a couple of years and it ’s a very quick and easy fix for blown out skies. You can borrow my horrible image to practise on if you like, copyright is mine etc., The image was taken on an overcast, hazy day and probably really wouldn’t be worth keeping, but there will be images that you have with a blown out sky that are worth keeping. Open the image in Photoshop and duplicate the layer by pressing Ctrl + J on the keyboard or dragging it to the create new layer icon at the bottom of the layers palette. On the side toolbar select the rectangular marquee tool – reference the image below and make your selection is in a similar place. You can selecting the blown out sky and down into the tree area to get any patches that may be showing through the trees. You should have the marching ants showing. Create a Selective Colour adjustment layer by clicking on the little ying yang symbol at the bottom of the layers palette and selecting Selective Colour. The marching ants will disappear, that’s OK. At the bottom of the selective colour dialogue choose Absolute (see image) and from the drop down menu at the top choose White. Fiddle with the sliders until you get a colour that you like – you can make the colour quite strong because you will be able to take the opacity down later and change the colour altogether if you like (the joys of adjustment layers). I’ve gone a little nuts with my colour to show you how well it works. Make sure your f/ground colour is set to black and the b/ground to white. Click on the mask to make sure you are working on it, then go to Filter>Render>Clouds – you can just click on clouds, or you can hold down the shift key when you click on clouds to get a more intense result. After you have applied the clouds filter you can also use Ctrl + F to get a different effect. I doubled clicked on the Selective Colour thumbnail and changed the colour, I also took the layer opacity down to 65%. Here is the final image and then a comparison image – Have fun!
For some unknown reason I didn’t upload this one when I uploaded the rest of my zodiac series! So here it is. You will have to delve a little further into my gallery to see the rest.

Because Easter is approaching I thought it appropriate :) The child’s sustenance, or umbilical cord if you like is coming from a tree, symbolic of the healing that nature can bring….the new life and growth that comes with nurture both of spirit and of nature. Humility is understanding our rightful place in the scheme of all things, including nature, family structure and the wider community…... a world where there is tolerance for all, is the one i pray for

FEATURED IN RedBubble Popular Art / INSPIRED ART / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—— I created the background canvas, using many layers of colours and textures, and adding gradients for the light. The Walls are from my own stock. All the animals and Libra herself, were cut out and saved, and then added to the background. Multiple copies of each one were layered and blended in using a whole host of blending modes. Lots of painting followed and final adjustments to colours and textures were imposed. / For full stock credits – see below. / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-— / / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-— / Librans are Lovely….... Libra is the only inanimate sign of the zodiac, all the others representing either humans or animals. Many modern astrologers regard it as the most desirable of zodiacal types because it represents the zenith of the year, the high point of the seasons, when the harvest of all the hard work of the spring is reaped. There is a mellowness and sense of relaxation in the air as mankind enjoys the last of the summer sun and the fruits of his toil. Librans too are among the most civilized of the twelve zodiacal characters and are often good looking. They have elegance, charm and good taste, are naturally kind, very gentle, and lovers of beauty, harmony (both in music and social living) and the pleasures that these bring. They have good critical faculty and are able to stand back and look impartially at matters which call for an impartial judgment to be made on them. But they do not tolerate argument from anyone who challenges their opinions, for once they have reached a conclusion, its truth seems to them self-evident; and among their faults is an impatience of criticism and a greed for approval. But their characters are on the whole balanced, diplomatic and even tempered. Librans are sensitive to the needs of others and have the gift, sometimes to an almost psychic extent, of understanding the emotional needs of their companions and meeting them with their own innate optimism – they are the kind of people of whom it is said, “They always make you feel better for having been with them.” They are very social human beings. They loathe cruelty, viciousness and vulgarity and detest conflict between people, so they do their best to cooperate and compromise with everyone around them, and their ideal for their own circle and for society as a whole is unity. Their cast of mind is artistic rather than intellectual, though they are usually too moderate and well balanced to be avant garde in any artistic endeavor. They have good perception and observation and their critical ability, with which they are able to view their own efforts as well as those of others, gives their work integrity. In their personal relationships they show understanding of the other person’s point of view, trying to resolve any differences by compromise, and are often willing to allow claims against themselves to be settled to their own disadvantage rather than spoil a relationship. They like the opposite sex to the extent of promiscuity sometimes, and may indulge in romanticism bordering on sentimentality. Their marriages, however, stand a good chance of success because they are frequently the union of “true minds”. The Libran’s continuing kindness toward his or her partner mollifies any hurt the latter may feel if the two have had a tiff. Nor can the Libran’s spouse often complain that he or she is not understood, for the Libran is usually the most empathetic of all the zodiacal types and the most ready to tolerate the beloved’s failings. Digital fine art in oil painting style by Mariska / December/2009 This is a collaborate work with the very talented Anna-Marie Docherty aka Anaisnais. / I’ve read her beautiful poem and here is the result . Some new tomorrow / by Anaisnais In death we departed, / you knew your time had come. / Your body rose to meet last breath, / then sunk again, to hold / forever’s peace within your chest. Such frozen coldness set your bones, / grey/blue lips, syanosis undertones; / and what for me to do next, / but search your soul, / which lies not in your breast? Confused, perplexed, / I know you do not sleep; / but watch the world go by. / Not in the casket buried 6 foot deep, / yet in my heart and mind. A trace of sadness, / not understanding yet; / and nothing to lose. / So mournful these tears I cry, / unseen under the mist of time. Saying Goodbye the next life’s waiting, / I see the road back in different light. / Wavering unsafe over the horizon, / I conjure dream like wraiths; / sinister and heavy against the spirits. Where memories leap / you will not die, / for patiently you’ll wait; / and until then I know you’ll stand / like sentinal at gate. I know you keep a watch o’er us, / protect from harm / all those you loved. / Through long and lonely hours I sigh, / remembering long lost days gone by. You keep me warm / and comfort me in ways / Only you could ever know how / Until we meet again some day / some bright new tomorrow. The view of Paris, capital of France. Taken from the very top of Sacre Coeur. Earlier today I had a phone call from Dean, asking if I would edit one of my existing shots for him to give to his sister for Christmas. He chose Atop Sacre Coeur, original of which can be seen below. After completing I thought I would add it to my folio. It has been a piece I have always thought about editing, but never actually got around to. I have never added a treated version of an existing piece to my folio, so this is all new to me! Let me know what you think of the two versions :) I edited the piece with a texture from www.deviantart.com free use stock, adjusted the colour and saturation, layered twice.
