Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds, wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act on their dreams with open eyes, to make them possible.” / Thomas E. Grim Reaper – noun / the personification of death. [Origin: 1925–30] Old Slavic tribes viewed Death as a woman in white clothes, with a never-fading green sprout in her hand. The touch of the sprout would put a human to an everlasting sleep. This image survived Christianization well into the Middle Ages, only being replaced by the more traditional European image of a walking skeleton as late as in the 15th century. Death as a sentient entity is a concept that has existed in many societies since the beginning of recorded history. In Western cultures, death is usually given the name, the “Grim Reaper”, and shown as a skeletal figure carrying a large scythe, and wearing a midnight black gown, robe or cloak with a hood, or sometimes, a white burial shroud. Usually when portrayed in the black-hooded gown, only his eyes can be seen.

This is dedicated to the memory of a very great lady i once worked with in my first job. She was a fantastic friend and an artist who i greatly admired. She found out she had cancer, with only a few months to live, she sold all her belongings and arrived at work to say goodbye with just a rucksack on her back. She planned to spend her last remaining days travelling in Australia with her sister, her only relative. Before her tearful farewell she slipped me a piece of paper with the words “I have nothing, I fear nothing, I am free” written on. I have never forgotten those words or her. Dedicated to the memory of Fiona Ivankovic. Photomontage.

The Dance by Oriah Mountain Dreamer I have sent you my invitation, / the note inscribed on the palm of my hand by the fire of living. / Don’t jump up and shout, “Yes, this is what I want! Let’s do it!” / Just stand up quietly and dance with me. Show me how you follow your deepest desires, / spiralling down into the ache within the ache. / And I will show you how I reach inward and open outward / to feel the kiss of the Mystery, sweet lips on my own, everyday. Don’t tell me you want to hold the whole world in your heart. / Show me how you turn away from making another wrong without abandoning yourself when you are hurt and afraid of being unloved. Tell me a story of who you are, / And see who I am in the stories I am living. / And together we will remember that each of us always has a choice. Don’t tell me how wonderful things will be . . . some day. / Show me you can risk being completely at peace, / truly OK with the way things are right now in this moment, / and again in the next and the next and the next. . . I have heard enough warrior stories of heroic daring. / Tell me how you crumble when you hit the wall, / the place you cannot go beyond by the strength of your own will. / What carries you to the other side of that wall, / to the fragile beauty of your own humanness? And after we have shown each other how we have set and kept the clear, healthy boundaries that help us live side by side with each other, let us risk remembering that we never stop silently loving those we once loved out loud. Take me to the places on the earth that teach you how to dance, the places where you can risk letting the world break your heart. / And I will take you to the places where the earth beneath my feet and the stars overhead make my heart whole again and again. Show me how you take care of business / without letting business determine who you are. / When the children are fed but still the voices within and around us shout that soul’s desires have too high a price, / let us remind each other that it is never about the money. Show me how you offer to your people and the world / the stories and the songs you want our children’s children to remember, and I will show you how I struggle / not to change the world, but to love it. Sit beside me in long moments of shared solitude, / knowing both our absolute aloneness and our undeniable belonging. Dance with me in the silence and in the sound of small daily words, holding neither against me at the end of the day. And when the sound of all the declarations of our sincerest / intentions has died away on the wind, dance with me in the infinite pause before the next great inhale of the breath that is breathing us all into being, not filling the emptiness from the outside or from within. Don’t say, “Yes!” / Just take my hand and dance with me.

Warrior of the Light / “A warrior of the light does not spend his days trying to play the role that others have chosen for him. A warrior of the light does not waste his time listening to provocations; he has a destiny to fulfil. A warrior of the light knows his own faults, but he also knows his own qualities. A warrior of the light always does his best and expects the best of others. A warrior knows that the farthest-flung star in the Universe reveals itself in the things around him. It is even more difficult to define a path for yourself. The person who doesn’t make a choice dies in the eyes of the Lord, even though he continues to breath and to walk about the streets. For a man has to choose therein lies his strenght in the power of his decisions. When a person really desires something, all the universe conspires to help that person to realize his dream. When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it. You can become blind by seeing each day as a similar one. Each day is a different one, each day brings a miracle of its own. It’s just a matter of paying attention to this miracle.” / Paulo Coelho
