The Sierra Wave passing over the Alabama Hills. The Sierra Nevada Escarpment can be seen in the back left. The photo was taken in Spring and you can see some patches of yellow wildflowers in the foreground. This is an HDR created from 5 exposures set 1 stop apart. This was exhibited at the 2008 Orange County Fair in Costa Mesa, Ca.

I thought I’d try some evening shots as it’s not something I’ve done much of. This was taken just as it was almost dark. In this ‘experiment’ I used the flash to light some of the foreground. I quite liked the effect. Nikon D200 / 18-200 vr lens / F3.5 / 0.62 sec / ISo 100 / Focal length 18mm

Ulysses S. Grant, Jr. (1852-1929): The son of President Ulysses S. Grant came to the San Diego area in 1893 for his wife’s health. He was active in real estate and promoting the San Diego area. He built the U.S. Grant Hotel as a memorial to his father. The bronze Angel of Death is the work of Henry Lukeman, a prominent eastern sculptor who had studied with Daniel Chester French (Sculptor of the Lincoln figure in the Lincoln Memorial). The stone was cast in 1911. Henry Lukeman later worked on the Stone Mountain Memorial in Georgia. /
