A fellow photographer, asked me this question. Why do I choose to jump into this hobby. And why not something else. And what do you hope to achieve? I’m interested to know what ur answers might be. For me. / Its about capturing the moment and the beauty, that I experienced, and share it to my family, and friends, and other people who enjoys them. / Why not something else. Owh well … I’m not too good with paintings (my mum does painting, my dad does photography). Not too good with digital works, vector, etc. I guess, I better off clicking off button, setting aperture and shutter speed hehehe … :P Hope to achieve? / Personal satisfaction, and getting people to appreciate more about what’s happening around them. / And especially, appreciate it more about one’s eyes, that enable us to enjoy things that we see. It such a blessing :) What about you? I know this sound exclusively to photography as a medium. But RB consist of artists from various background. / But, changed that ‘photography’ to whatever medium of artworks you use to express yourself. Whether its on writing, vector, painting, etc . I’m very curious :)

Bullshit! And this is why. I realised whilst reading other peoples comments that some people have been dissuaded from taking photos around interesting industrial locations. After all you must be a terrorist if you are taking a photo of a refinery, right! Thought I’d share some of my experiences on the subject as I am very often in these kinds of situations. My day job is photographing cars for magazines. I often do this in industrial locations and sometimes near sensitive installations such as refineries, ports, airports, you name it. I’ve been accosted by security guards, customs agents, police, ignorant old farts, you name it. I’m sure someone has already reported me to ASIO. I’m not a lawyer so don’t try to use me as an excuse if you end up in jail, do your own legal research, consult a lawyer if you think you need to, but this is the information I have obtained from both State and Federal Police when I’ve called to question the legality of such photography. Basically, there are no laws which prevent you photographing any property from a public place! Private properties such as shopping centres, subways, airports etc are a completely different story whilst within the property. The property owner sets the rules and you must abide or leave. But if you are outside the private property and on public land then shoot away. There can be local council By-Laws preventing photography, such as on some beaches, so it is worth asking the question if you think it might be relevant. However, any Police officer can do just about anything they like to you should they have good reason to suspect you of Terrorist activity. They can confiscate your camera, detain and question you. My solution to this is to have some forms of identification or samples of my work, in a small compact Folio, which can be shown to quickly convince them of my real intentions and identity. I have a Canon CPS card with my photo on it and business cards, or you could join one of the professional photographic associations (if you are eligible) some of which now offer membership cards for this very reason. There’s heaps of good information here on the legality of photography. It’s worth reading. / http://www.4020.net/words/photorights.php Having said that, you can’t then just do anything you like with the images because of trade mark and copyright issues with buildings and company logos, but that’s a whole different issue anyway. Just being allowed to take the photo doesn’t mean you can do whatever you like with it. My suggestion is that if you are going to be shooting in really questionable places AND you think you might have trouble with security, then try to contact the security people first and tell them who you are and what you are doing. DO NOT ASK FOR THEIR PERMISSION, you don’t need it! Just offer them the courtesy of letting them know who you are and what you are doing so that they don’t have to worry about you. Shell, for example, is a bit touchy about this kind of thing. I always call them and tell them of my intentions to shoot around their refineries. They appreciate it and we both play nicely. Same thing at airports such as Moorabin or Essendon. It works. Know your rights and don’t let the ignorant push you around. Of course never let things get out of hand. I can honestly say that I would be the first to call the police should a security guard get heavy handed with me. Not that it’s ever happened, and hopefully it never will. JJ

Disclaimer: This is not legal advice or even professional advice. This is some stuff I’ve learned along this funny little thing called life and may not apply in any way to your current situation. At worst, it’s my opinion, at best it’s some ideas for you to think about. If you need real proper advice, go see your solicitor. I’m of the opinion that photography should make me money, not cost me money. So far, I have been successful is making more from a photograph than it took me to create. Here is my list of not so secret tips and advice on covering your arse and saving your cash. When To Pay There are times where spending your hard earned money is the right choice. For example to obtain goods or services you can not find for less (or free) elsewhere. Or when you have done all the maths yourself and you feel you are buying into a good deal. But there are also some pit falls to watch out for. Art Direction, Ideas and Intellectual Property My rule of thumb, if I am paying to shoot, I should have full rights to everything I take. No ifs buts or maybes about it. If you shoot a commercial, the art direction team put together a shoot and then hire a photographer to take photos of what they and the crew have created. They pay for lighting design, they pay the models, they pay the hair stylist, they pay the guy who makes the coffees- and they pay the photographer. Some businesses operate under a similar model but suck money out of photographers in the process. As part of a ‘workshop’ or ‘event’, several photographers rock up with their cameras and take photos of a scene. Often they have little or no control of the setup, can’t communicate properly with the models and will walk out of it with similar images to everyone else who attended! In the worst cases they have restricted rights regarding how they use their images. So is essence, they have paid for something that out in the real world, would be making them money. Sorry if it sounds confusing, the concept completely baffles me. When you are shooting someone else’s ideas and have restricted publishing rights or have little influence over the set up, posing, lighting or set design, (in my opinion) you should be getting paid by them. After all, you are doing them a favor by taking images of their creative work. Classes or Tuition Wanting to improve you skills and knowledge is a great thing. And there are numerous classes, mentors and workshops available for you to choose from. If you are going to pay to attend these, make sure you are getting what you pay for. Before you hand over any cash there are a few details that you should have to help make your decision. Class Size: The more people attending, the cheaper the class should be. If there is a practical component, I usually wont accept a class bigger than 10-12 / Location & Time: no point signing up for an ‘on location’ workshop only to find it is out of your way. Also as a safety issue, you should always be able to tell a trusted person exactly where and when you will be shooting. / The Teacher: You should be able to find and contact the person facilitating the class to verify their experience and ask questions. It not always convenient for a facilitator to take calls from a whole class, but you should be able to send them an email and get a reply without going through a middle man. / Contracts: Ask if you will need to sign any contracts and insist upon receiving them before paying. / What do you get: do you get class notes to take home? Exactly what does the course entail? What can you hope to know and have learned at the end of the course? Contracts These are a great way to waste your money. They also happen to be very important. First and foremost contracts exists to make people money or stop people from making money. So before signing anything, read it a few times and make sure you are aware of what your actions are costing you. If you need to get images approved before sale or publication, you could be agreeing to never publishing or selling any images taken if none are ‘approved.’ It is completely reasonable to request changes to a contract or write your own and offer it instead. Don’t sign away potential income! You should always be able to take a contract away and show it to other people for advice before signing it, and especially before paying for anything. If you are not given this opportunity, my advice is to avoid it with a ten foot pole. And then there are the bazillion poorly written contracts that mean very little or nothing at all. It’s actually quite funny to me sometimes, what people will put on paper. Useful Links Australian Competition & Consumer Commission / Scam Watch Photographers – What are you paying for (part 2).

Be open minded about your camera gear You can make a tripod for only a few dollars, tracing paper makes a great diffuser and a trip to a hardware store will give you very bright lights. Yes, there are downsides, and for the technically perfect photographer, these suggestions will be a very funny joke. The point here is keep and open mind and try new things before forking out $100 for a piece of shiny material that resembles a $5 dash board cover. Unless you use a biscuit tin to take photos, eventually you will want to buy a new camera. Shop around, get advice, try out a friend’s and when you walk into the shop, don’t spend hundreds of dollars on accessories that you wont’ use. It doesn’t hurt to haggle a bit either. When the salesman tries to close the deal, my typical response is “what else are you throwing in?” Studio Hire So the first question you ask yourself is “Do I know anyone who already has a studio set up?” If the answer is yes. Skip the rest of this section, suck up your pride and ask them if you can visit and have a play. The rest of you, ask yourself what you are paying for. Is it the chance to get a professionally lit shot? Maybe you could try a lighting course that will not only give you many opportunities to work with professional lights, but will teach you the theory and science of lighting. Often these courses are much cheaper than a similar amount of time in a rented studio. Do you want to try shooting in more controlled conditions? Try clearing out a room of your house and setting up a few scenes. The results may not be brilliant but it will give you a sense of how much time you can spend setting a shot up before you get to click the button. If you are certain that a proper studio is for you, consider hiring it out through a camera club for a discounted rate, or hiring it out with a couple of other photographers to minimise your expense. Models and TFP Models and photographers have one thing in common – they both need a portfolio of photos to proceed in their career. This is why Time For Photo shoots have become so popular. But before you jump up and down about using a free model take a second think about what is fair and ethical. At the end of the day, both you and the model should be happy with your arrangement. If someone feels short changed, you should consider modifying your approach. This is my rule of thumb. If a model approaches me to take shots for her portfolio, and I am working to her brief, she should pay me. If we have put our heads together to come up with a project and proceed on equal footing where we both use the images, then neither should pay. And if I conceive and art direct the shoot and have priority over the image rights, I should pay the model. Basically whoever comes out on top should be paying the person who is doing them a favor. Then there are test shoots, these are almost always done on a time for photos basis. These shoots are a bit like ‘warm up’ shoots for the model and photographer to see if they want to work together properly. They are also a chance to test new ideas or equipment. Often the images taken in test shoots are less than great, and if they do turn out, they are most commonly shared equally between all parties. If you are requesting a model release form because you intend to profit from the images, in my opinion, the model should be paid or you should have an arrangement to split any profits. My plan of attack is to put out a call for models. Then I will do a test shoot with the model who has contacted me and we either have equal rights to the shots or split them down the middle. If the test shoot goes well we may arrange to work together again. This might mean doing an even split of “her ideas” and “my ideas” for no payment, or it may be paid work if I am contracted to produce shots for a commercial job. Hi everyone. I’m writing this journal in the hopes of gaining some advice, hints and perhaps even hearing about your personal stories of how to get into photography as a career. I’ve been a High School English/History/Drama teacher for almost 10years and I’m in need of a career change. At the moment I am only working part-time and won’t have to return to full time work until my youngest son starts school – that will be in 2 years. So I figure I’ve got 2 years to get myself organised. Financially, I’m not in a position to start up my own business therefore I’m going to need to find somebody who wants to employ me. My first questions relate to getting a portfolio/CV organised. What’s the best way to go about it? Do people still have portfolio’s with hard copies or is digital preferred? If hard copies, what size? What should I include in them? How diverse should they be???? Like I said, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Secondly, is anyone likely to employ a self-taught photographer?? I haven’t had any official educational training relating to photography, but I am a quick learner! Obviously I have skills as I am a teacher, but will this be enough? So…just hearing your personal stories will give me some ideas. Also, if you think I need a reality check please tell me. I don’t want to kid myself into thinking I could do this as a career if there really is no chance. I’d be much better off trying to convince myself to stay teaching! Thanks in advance for your advice. Oh, just one last thing…..anyone need an assistant???

I have a theory. Bare with me as I explain and before you assume I’m affected by drugs (only a few) or full of manure. You can’t improve your photography using a camera. / You can’t improve your photography using photoshop. / You even can’t improve your photography with one of these: A few things over time have made me realise this: I took a bubble break a while ago and in using a notepad I found more ideas coalescing there than behind the viewfinder. I realised photographic ideas didn’t have to be instant fast food but could be slow cooked over time. I can revisit and add to the notebook and it has become invaluable. Some ideas are over a year old and yet unrealised. This one was four months on the pages of the notepad. I spent time on a long vacation recently and towards the end I found myself shooting less. Instead I found myself experiencing the world first hand and not exclusively though the viewfinder. Interaction with people and the environment didn’t give me photographs but it did help me find inspiration amongst, sometimes the most trivial, things. / In these latter stages If I took a photograph it was with my point and shoot and a sort of visual note – a stepping stone to other ideas and possibilities. I realised that nudity, HDR and texture layers didn’t add to images unless there was a story to tell or artistic vision to enunciate from their inclusion. I started to loose the fear of not using them. Re-reading some old and new information on the bubble gave me cause to think. / / / So what do I think the key is?....It’s this: Feed your mind. Talking to writers is a particularly good form of mind food. It may sound obvious but they use words as images – they photograph things in language. If you understand how they change media then you can become more adept at adapting yours. Meet and get to know someone you want to photograph – What are their dreams? What gives them passion? Do you know how they like their coffee? Try writing down little random snippets and collecting them – they are your ingredients for a good recipe. Don’t rush things, if your thoughts are sparse then don’t despair – they will grow. Go slow. For example: if you post one image a day here then after a while your throttling of work makes you start to self analyse and look for your best rather than what is acceptable. Take note of and remember the following photo quotes. It’s always worthwhile to learn from masters. “The wisdom of the wise and the experience of the ages are perpetuated in quotations”. – Benjamin Disraeli 1.“ You don’t take a photograph, you make it. – Ansel Adams Full awareness of what makes a good photo is essential in taking great photographs. Why would anyone be interested in this photo and what elements can be included or excluded to make it truly great? 2.“ Your first 10,000 photographs are your worst. – Henri Cartier-Bresson Do you know how many photos you have taken up until now? You will have to take thousands of pictures to reach a point where you can begin to evaluate them objectively. Looking upon your photos as if you were looking at them through someone else’s eyes is a good way to give yourself constructive criticism. Comparing your first photos with your most recent, do you see improvement? Do you remember how you loved some of your first photos – do you still love them or are they now not so good anymore? 3. “ Beauty can be seen in all things, seeing and composing the beauty is what separates the snapshot from the photograph. – Matt Hardy You often don’t or can’t see beauty in the world until someone shows it to you. Take a look around you just now – even without moving from the computer. Can you see something in a new way, a different way of presenting something common? Just take a look again… 4. “ Nothing happens when you sit at home. I always make it a point to carry a camera with me at all times…I just shoot at what interests me at that moment. – Elliott Erwitt When the world is your canvas, so to speak, you need your tools with you to capture everything around you. Make a habit of always carrying a camera with you—you will never suffer the regret of wishing you had. 5. “ Which of my photographs is my favorite? The one I’m going to take tomorrow. – Imogen Cunningham Never be fully satisfied with what you’ve done. Never stop photographing. It is very likely that your best photograph has not yet been captured. 6. “ You’ve got to push yourself harder. You’ve got to start looking for pictures nobody else could take. You’ve got to take the tools you have and probe deeper. – William Albert Allard We are always looking for reasons for not taking good pictures. Cartier-Bresson used film camera, same lens, no flash, same shutter speed – he didn’t need the newest digital equipment to take great photos. We all have access to some subjects that no one else has access to – look at your friends’ hobbies, the workplaces of friends and family, and any place you have access to find a vision that comes uniquely from your access. Many people would dream of having the same access you have, and you might not have considered how valuable your access is. 7. “ If I saw something in my viewfinder that looked familiar to me, I would do something to shake it up. – Garry Winogrand How often have you seen a photo that is missing something, thinking, “This is a good photo but I’d make it different somehow.”? Sometimes small things make a big difference. Don’t be afraid to shake things up. 8. “ I always thought good photos were like good jokes. If you have to explain it, it just isn’t that good. – Anonymous Sometimes it is interesting to hear the story behind the photo and you see the photo in a new light. But in most cases a photo shouldn’t need a story to back it up. It has to speak for itself. 9. “ Twelve significant photographs in any one year is a good crop. – Ansel Adams Even one of the masters in photography, Ansel Adams, didn’t expect to get more than 12 great photographs each year. How can anyone expect more? Take a look at your last year in photos – do you really see 12 photos that stand out from the rest? 10. “It can be a trap of the photographer to think that his or her best pictures were the ones that were hardest to get. – Timothy Allen – On editing photos Editing photos can often be the most difficult but also the most satisfying part. Sometimes taking a quick look at all the photos and then going away for a while before taking a closer look lends a fresh eye to your viewing. You may see things you did not notice previously. Stepping away from the mass of photos can make certain images stand out in your mind’s eye, leaving a memorable impression that can characterize a good photo. Taken from here
