Another self portrait. Ya…I’m desperate for models. / Took a little work to mount the camera in the dash and eliminate any shake for the multiple exposure. A freshly paved road also helped! / If you can’t laugh at yourself…who can you laugh at? I meant to add this and forgot. This was my inspiration… My pappy said “Son your gonna drive me to drinkin’ / If you don’t stop driving that hot rod Lincoln” Have you heard the story of the hot rod race / Where the Fords and the Lincolns were setting the pace? / Well that story is true cause I’m here to say / I was driving that model A. It’s got a Lincoln motor and its really souped up / And that model A body makes it look like a pup / It’s got eight cylinders, uses them all / It’s got overdrive, just won’t stall It’s got a four barrel carb, and dual exhaust / With foureleven gears you can really get lost. / It’s got safety tubes, but I ain’t scared / Breaks are good, tires fair Pullin out of San Pedro late one night / With the moon and the stars just shinin bright / We was headed up grapevine Hill / Passing cars like they was standing still All of a sudden, in the wink of an eye / A Cadillac sedan passed us by / I said “Boys this ones marked for me” / But by then the tail lights was all you could see Now the fellas rid me for being behind / So I thought I’d let that Lincoln unwind / Took my foot of the gas and man alive / I shoved it on down into over drive Wound it up to 110 / My speedometer said I hit top end / My foot was glued like lead to the floor / That’s all there is, and there ain’t no more Now the boys all thought that I’d lost my sense / Those telephone poles looked like a picket fence / They said “Slow down, I see spots!” / The lines on the road just looked like dots Took a corner, side swiped a truck / Crossed my fingers just for luck / My fenders was clicking the guard rail post / The guy beside me was white as a ghost We had smoke coming from out of the back / When I started gainin on that Cadillac / I knew I could catch him, I thought I could pass / But don’t you know by then we’d be low on gas I had flames coming from out of the side / Feel the tension, man what a ride / I said “Look out boys, I’ve got a license to fly” / And that Caddy pulled over and let us by All of the sudden she started knocking / Down in the dips she started rocking / I looked in the mirror. Red lights were blinking / The cops was after my Hot Rod Lincoln – Damn The arrested me and they put me in jail / Called my pappy to throw my bail / And he said “Son, you’re going to drive me to drinkin’ / If you don’t stop driving that Hot Rod Lincoln” *lyrics by All

WILD & FREE / / Honey (named after the colour of her eyes) and her three cubs were very obliging to rest on this ridge whilst they scanned the plains for breakfast. Taken in the Masai Mara early one morning about half an hour after sunrise, this is one of my favourite images and I find myself always coming back to it. / / (Masai Mara – Kenya) / / The world’s fastest land animal, the cheetah, is a unique and the most specialized member of the cat family and can reach speeds of 70 mph. Unlike other cats, the cheetah has a leaner body, longer legs, and has been referred to as the greyhound of the cats. It is not an aggressive animal, using flight versus fight. With its weak jaws and small teeth, the price it paid for speed, it cannot fight larger predators to protect its kill or young. The cheetah was once a common animal found on five continents, but is slowly losing its race for survival and is now classed as an Endangered Species! “Steady that shot” how to shoot slow shutter speeds

Do those available light photos sometimes come out a little fuzzy? Maybe you won’t even try a low light photo. Let’s look at some techniques for shooting in low light that may help. We are not discussing time exposures here just slower shutter speeds. Some of the first steps are to adjust the shutter speed/aperture combination for low light shooting. Generally speaking try to open up the aperture to allow shooting at a higher shutter speed. You can also change the EI value on the camera. If you normally shoot photos at EI200 and the camera indicates this photo will be shot at 1/15sec then increasing to EI800 will allow you to shoot at 1/60sec. And of course the higher the shutter speed the less camera movement is visible in the image. Now get a grip. Extend your hand, palm upright, with the thumb pointing away from you. Lay your camera in your hand with the thumb and forefinger wrapping around the lens. This distributes the weight of the camera down your arm. Place your other hand in the shooting position with your finger over the shutter release button. Now bring your elbows into your body and snug the camera top against your forehead. You now have a mini tripod made from your upper body. Much of the camera movement will now be absorbed by your upper body. All you have to do now is Frame+ Focus+ Hold your breath+ Squeeze the shutter release. Now lean against a wall, sign or lamppost. Spread your feet apart and slightly forward. When in this position and holding your camera as above you can shoot at 2-3 slower shutter speeds than normal. When shooting with long lenses many photographers choose to use a monopod. A long multi sectioned tube with a 1/4×20tpi stud on top that screws into the tripod mount on your camera or long lens itself. Sandbags can be placed on a wall, the ground or an open car window to cushion and stabilize your camera. Emergency sandbags can be made from a pair of socks or small plastic bag. Tripods are three legged structures with a provision for mounting the camera at the top providing a rigid but adjustable platform for stabilizing the camera and lens. Many photographers will also use a remote shutter release and some will lock up the mirror to further reduce vibrations when using a tripod. Of course, for hand holding your camera, a well toned set of muscles help. So occasionally doing some upper body strengthening exercises will also help. In a quick shooting situation you might try wrapping the camera strap around your arm to tighten up your grip on the camera. Or with the strap over your shoulder extend the camera until the strap tightens up for a little more support. Plan your stance and stand your plan Frame+ Focus+ Hold your breath+ Squeeze the shutter release. / Have fun shoot lots of pictures-Larry Grayam
