Took this on Stockton Bight, a long series of sand dunes that stretch from Anna Bay to Newcastle. These traps were placed to protect Williamtown air base (I believe) during World War II. 26km or so of these, 2m high concrete reinforced pyramids, and now all you can find is this small group, situated in a sand blow. Even they come and go depending on the wind. We took a tour from Anna bay, to see the tank traps, tin city and the wreck of the Sygma(?) Happy New Year everyone! This shot was taken at the Sunshine Coast just before Christmas 2007….well it’s an old shot isn’t it. Taken with my Canon 5D and the EF 16-35mm f/2.8 L II USM Lens. No Filter has been used but I did some fake HDR processing (single shot) using Dynamic Photo HDR. It’s a fun program and a great alternative to Photomatix.

The SS Dicky was washed ashore onto Dicky Beach in 1893 during a cyclone. It was re-floated, but again, heavy seas turned the ship about and back onto the sand where it remains to this day. / / The suburb and beach was named after the ship. The beach is an unspoilt stretch of sun-drenched sand, on Queensland’s magnificent Sunshine Coast. Taken with my 5D and 16-35mm lens and I was so lucky to have a nature spectacle as the fog rolled in from West creating a mystic ambience I have also written a photographers guide if you are interested in knowing more about this site

I love rainy, overcast, windy days. Someone has to, I suppose. The pink/purple of the fireweed has yet to reach its full splendor. As Alaskan legend has it, when fireweed blooms all the way to the top of its spire – the six-week countdown to winter begins. Some of us can hardly wait. It felt great to get out in the elements! Nikon D200, Nikkor 70-300mm, 70mm, F/11, 1/200, -0.67 exposure compensation, ISO 200, manual exposure mode, monopod, rain snood. Converted from RAW (12 bit) to jpeg using Nikon’s Capture NX 2.1.1. Cokin two-f/stop ND grad filter. / Fireweed, genus Epilobium, especially E. angustifolium, has long, terminal, spikelike clusters of pinkish-purple flowers. _A moment alone (early spring) /

This is the Isle of Skye at it’s best, when there is a lot of colour in the landcsape, with the low sun we get this far North at this time of year, accentuating every detail. / This is the crofting community of Tarskavaig, with the glorious backdrop of the Cuillin Hills. / “Crofting” is small time farming, or “smallholding” where a few crops might be grown, and a small number of cattle or sheep kept. A single RAW file, shot on my Canon EOS 50D , polariser filter, f25, 1/2 sec, underexposed by 2/3 stop, iso 100, auto wb, processed in Adobe CR, then in CS3. MORE OF MY ISLE OF SKYE WORK…...

Kyleakin is the first village encountered on the Isle of Skye, when you cross over the bridge from Kyle of Lochalsh…....this is where the old Ferry boat used to land, which I don’t miss at all, romantic it might be, but darned inconvenient !! / The old ruin you can see behind the boats is Castle Moil…......a few facts for you….... “The 14th Century Castle Moil has had many names in its long history. Also known as Dun Akyn (Norse for Hakon’s Fort) and An Caisteal Maol in Gaelic, it is now a romantic ruin. Sited at the Skye end of the road bridge in the village of Kyleakin, the castle has Norse connections. Legend has it that a Norwegian princess, otherwise known as “Saucy Mary”, ordered a chain to be hung from the castle to the mainland so that no boat could pass without paying a tax.” / Nothing new under the sun then, eh ??!! LOL !! A three RAW HDR, shot on my Canon EOS 50D, polarising filter fitted, iso 100, f23, Auto WB, processed in Photomatix, then sprucing up in Adobe Photoshop CS3. / I used HDR because of the extreme light / shadow.
