This evening was the opening night of the Bacchus Marsh Rotary Club Art Show and Sale which is held every year over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. This year’s event had an additional category, for photographs (although I have entered in the general media section for a few years and won a commended prize a couple of years ago). But this year, I won first prize in the photography section with my image In Another World. It’s the first time I’ve ever won an event in an art show, more specifically this one in my home town. There were almost 800 works of art in the show overall (although not sure how many in my category but a lot more photographs than in the past). It is such a huge honour for me and the feedback I’m getting from the local community even after only a few hours has been so wonderful. Here’s the image in question. / And here’s one of me at the show looking pretty flushed and stressed (as I do in large crowds) but still very excited. / A very big thank you to my Redbubble friends for their support, to Keryl who suggested this photo project in the first place, to my friends Sarah and Ana who encourage me and support my artistic endeavours, and Redbubble for providing me with the opportunity to reconnect with the creativity within. / xxx / (the prize money is wonderful and very much needed … now, fingers crossed that someone will buy my image)
Manic Reflections . . . One…
Manic Reflections . . . One day i awakened to a simply sweet, “I heart you!” message on my bathroom mirror. Days later, a bi-polar/manic/sleep-deprived version of me impulsively grabbed my camera, tripod, trusty remote and started striking poses in my mirror. Wishing to immortalize the i heart you message, in some way, before zapping it with Mr. Windex! So . . . i crouched up on my counter, gradually getting closer and closer to the mirror. It was wonderfully strange, surreal and comical – as i carefully attempted to seat myself in the bathroom sink . . . while the rest of me perched perilously on the bathroom counter. Purging my manic energy, creatively, provided me with a sense of relief and surrender. After this series was photographed, i went on to photograph two more, in my studio. It was after the photographing of the three, separate series – that i was finally able to slip toward slumber. So what follows are manic reflections . . . partake and enjoy :) / image title – the mirror speaks / image title – the sensual realm / image title – another version of me / image title – the inner sanctum / image title – fragile / image title – inward bound / image title – the confrontation / image title – the chameleon Bi-polarities . . . Around 18 it started to sink in that something not-quite-right was going on in my frantic mind. As I was always struggling to pay attention in school . . . i also became aware that i would get these incredible highs, feeling euphoric, invincible, on top of the world – no matter what my actual reality was . . . everything was grandiose! These manic episodes usually lasted about 2 weeks, followed by the worst lows which often lasted months. In a depressive state everything was life and death, everyday problems became overwhelming, i just wanted to crawl into a quiet, dark corner and simply cease to exist. Then there were those inbetween states where i guess i would be what was considered “normal” though to me these inbetween states felt like emotional flat-lining, i felt kind of numb – being so used to the extreme emotions i felt most of the time. When i was younger, my manic episodes were amazing, accompanied by feelings of invincibility, euphoria and pseudo-bliss. I would feel on top of the world! Now, these manic episodes are more dark and frenetic in nature. And i find myself craving the sleep these manic episodes deprive me of. It’s hard to stay on schedule/task when i go day, after day – without sleep. I don’t have more energy when i am manic, i am just more hyper and restless, unable to slow down – which creates the illusion of high energy . . . inside my body and mind are crying out for sleep. It would take another 12 years before i learned how to manage these intense moodswings, learned to go with the flow and how to keep my head above water – no matter what my mood. There were years of self-destructive coping methods and soul numbing medications. Eventually i decided to approach my bi-polarity from a spiritual/holistic perspective. I decided to go vegan and stopped consuming foods loaded with additives/preservatives. I learned about behavioral management, structure, meditation/yoga, prayer, daily spiritual renewal and daily exercise. Putting all of these things into practice, over time . . . allowed me to utilize my moods creatively AND constructively. beingnormalisoverrated JAEDA!

The gods of photography are shining their light on me and brought me another challenge win, with the same image that won another challenge. I’m just speechless. / The challenge Sense of Place hosted by the All About Your Best Work group had some amazing images, but my image Sunset in Convict Lake, Mammoth Lakes, California got to first place again, and it’s all due to your votes and support. / So to all RB community: THANK YOU! See here for a recent heated discussion RE photoshoping of google images. I try to think in terms of how I would feel if someone used one of my photoshop-free images, tweaked it and put it back up as their own. Personally I would be wrapped and honoured if someone used my work to create something new, but I would just feel used if they didn’t really make anything new out of it and slapped a filter or two on it and then called it their own. It’s a matter of how much time and energy I put into creating the image against how little time and energy the modifier put in. I’d feel a bit ripped off. I think it’s good manners to ask for permission to use someone’s work, however I strongly believe the orignial artist has an obligation to set their terms before the modifying artist begins doing their thing. It’s a matter for the two artists to decide upon. For example, if someone said “I’m learning how to use photoshop, do you mind if I muck around with your photos” I’d say go ahead. But then I’d also feel oblidged to discuss whether they want to onsell the finished product and give a sense of what I would be happy and unhappy with. I am very very open to collaborating and sharing of work but I do think people have to give credit where credit is due and not take advantage of the hard work of somebody else. It is difficult to actually set a strict guideline or rule on this because it poses questions such as “How changed is changed enough” which can only be answered by the individual. I hope these reasons shed some light on my headspace. I would play with someones image and display it and say “look at what I learned how to do” but I would credit the original artists and I would not sell the new piece without permission. The example above was based on what I would do if the artist was an unknown and I was using a google image- in that case, yet again I would display my talents and say ‘check this out’ but without permission I would not sell it. I do not use photoshop and if I did learn how to use it I doubt I would sell my photoshoped work. I am almost certainly in the minority when I say this- but I see photo editing as one form of art and photo taking as another. Often the 2 cross paths but I can also see them as mutually exclusive talents. I don’t particularly want to be known as a creative and talented photo editor or manipulator so I wouldn’t sell edited work even if it were 100% my own. But that’s just me.

Ruined, I wait for redemption… Crumbled, holding tight as it had always been… Shattered, to realize as it had been, and can be no more… Seeing the past as the present… Tangible as grasping a mystic reflection. With all your ALL, you only make ripples until there is nothing more… Does it exhist? Had it ever? Will it ever again? It doesn’t matter… The matter is… what is now. Reflect on the reflection and you will know now what is all and always nothing at all. Photo for this HERE “Waiting for Antigua” ~ Reflecting pool in Antiqua, Guatemala © Skip Hunt

2007 has turned out to be such a great year, looking back, especially in terms of opportunities for expanding my creative outlets. Finding Artellaland was totally fabulous and has had me doing some really enjoyable work with collage and digital art techniques. And discovering Artists’ Trading Cards has been immense fun, too: I really enjoy the challenge of working inside such a small space. Perhaps my one intention this year is to become more involved in the community side of things, interact more with the other artists there. And there is a tutorial I want to write and share with others there. It shall be done! And of course getting into Redbubble has made such a difference for me in terms of my view of my own work. I have also learned so much from others and been inspired to keep going with this hobby of mine. Most of all, I love the opportunity to just immerse myself in the gorgeous work that comes out of the RB community. I intend to keep on experiencing and enjoying this nexus. I’m not very good at getting into and becoming involved in the forums here, either, though. I enjoy reading them and have gained lots. What and how to give back, though. I shall ponder this! And starting pottery classes has allowed me another opportunity for “beginner’s mind”, even though I did some pottery classes when I was a teenager. I am finding it quite difficult to take in all the intricacies of this new craft. But after only six months, once a week, I can’t really expect to be a master yet. I started this class with a view to making just one item and then more and more ideas came as I continued, so I will just have to keep on going!!! I have missed the classes during the holidays and I don’t start back until February. I have tried to do some work at home, but it isn’t really the same. However, I did have a great time dealing with my resistances on the couple of occasions I did work at home. So maybe next time will be better for me. I shall schedule an extra day per week or fortnight to spend some time on projects at home this year. And I shall make a point of continuing to enjoy what I have already created. I feel really satisfied with my creations so far. Finding cheap wool on ebay has allowed me to do much more knitting than I would ordinarily be able to afford to do. I couple this with my love of movie-watching. I do so like to see how both the movie and my knitting turn out in the end! And finding free patterns on the net has also allowed me more choice of projects. What a great hobby. I’m so glad I learned how to do it all those years ago and I am soooo grateful to those who have provided those lovely freebies for my crafting pleasure. I shall attempt to design a knitting pattern myself this year and share it with others for free, in return for what I have received. Even being involved in renovating our house has been a wonderful creative act. The spaces we have designed work really well and our house is becoming more and more of a pleasure to live in each day. And if I ever have to have anything to do with builders again, I will do a lot better than I did this time!!! Landscaping the backyard is the next project there. Should be a hoot…. Well, that lot ought to keep me going. It’s going to be a busy year, I think. Must intend some holidays and downtime, too, to recharge those batteries now and then. Still, I’m enjoying the view from this end of the stretch of time ahead called 2008. Here’s to all you Redbubblers for a happy, safe and fulfilling New Year!!! Cheers….and thanks for being there and doing what you do so well.

Over the years I’ve tried many art forms – tapestry weaving, drawing, painting, printmaking, even silversmithing, but somehow it is photography that enables me to best express my creativity. So, what is it about the camera, that heavy, hard-edged lump of black that lets me express what I cannot through the wondrous scent of oil paint or the silky softness of thread? I find the world, with it’s endless vistas and masses of detail and clutter, almost overwhelming, so I practice a heavy filtering process in my mind. However, this means that I often completely miss wonderful sights, sounds and experiences. I’ve learnt that, unless I do this, I feel like I walk around without my skin. But when I look through a camera lens I’m able to focus my mind on a very small piece of the world and so it becomes manageable. And, for me, the smaller the piece the better. I love my world in macro. And, just as I am in danger of suffering from sensory overload in a visual sense, so my brain is cluttered with millions of thoughts, each jostling to be heard. But when I look through the camera lens, then later work on the image on my computer screen, I’m able to focus clearly and completely. So, the hard work of photography becomes my private peaceful space. For the brief moment when I look through the viewfinder, nothing else exists and I can find a point of perfect clarity.

Thoughts… Change they say is good as it keeps forward motion in its constant state of evolving. It also helps elevate stagnation and murky waters of overgrown bacteria and algae from overwhelming a populace. Heavens knows those who are bored out there need to begin their own stirring of their own waters! There are times though when change causes deep emotions to stir in the spirits of human beings. As I continue to view the world and how we are so infinitesimal in comparison to the expanse of our known dimension I bring myself back to the subatomic thought process of who I am and from where I come from. I think “going home” does this to me quite often. As I am a keen observer to the world and its majestic creations under the assumption that it has all been placed in an orderly fashion by the Creator. I say assume as to a realization that we all live under a delusion of sorts that is sparked by what we know, think we know or do not know at all… assumptions. As I reflect, watch, listen, taste, smell and consume my mother, my father, my family, my sun, my stars, my grass, my trees, my birds, my mountains, my horses, my worship, my dinner, my bed, my dreams… I am the summation of an assumption that I am. An individual keenly blessed by God. Thank you Lord and guide me as I travel on towards the goal. As we know there are many snares and stumbling blocks placed before us. Along with those who seek to persecute… and stir up strife… we are to pray for… I am praying for my enemies. ~KL CGZ 2008
