  • As per the title, this is a ‘Cairns Birdwing’ butterfly (male I believe). I loved the colour and also the fact that he’s actually quite large (think length of your hand from fingertip to wrist). Enjoy!

  • No need to comment on this image; after Madeline M. Allen purchased a card of the original this morning we discussed resizing the image to avoid the borders which show on the card only size…......I was aware of the problem but chose to leave the image up as is because resizing it , distorts it just a bit…..but after consideration and discussion with Maddy, here is the resized version…..if you are interested in cards….the borders will not show…..... / / / __ / All The Materials Contained May Not Be Reproduced, Copied, Edited, Published, Transmitted Or Uploaded In Any Way Without My Permission. • Photo taken at a marsh I love to frequent in Quinte West, Ontario, Canada. This male mute swan was putting on a wonderful display for his female partner during mating season. • Tufted titmice, house finches, Carolina chickadees, and cardinals visit my patio feeders regularly and they all love my statue of Jesus where they find a resting place in their busy little lives. This is the bird version of the Garden of Eden with flowers which I posted earlier. Thanks to all the flower lovers who commented about that collage; I appreciate it and am offering this one for bird lovers.

  • Featured in Top Shelf Wildlife & Nature Art August 1, 2009. I have spent countless hours the past 3 summers trying to capture photographs of the ruby-throated hummingbirds that visit my property each year. This particular image is one of my favorites. I loved the way this female (whom I call Ruby) was perched on this branch, with both wings spread, looking down at the ant approaching her little foot. / —-—-—-—-—-—-——- / Camera & Location Details / Canon EOS Rebel XTi with 100-400mm (at 310mm) f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens. SS 1/800, AP Mode, f/8.0 ISO 200. Photo taken on my property in Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada / Flat Black Frame & Bright White Matting / / Ruby-Throated Hummingbird info. courtesy of Wikipedia / The Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris), is a small hummingbird. It is the only species of hummingbird that regularly nests east of the Mississippi River in North America. Ruby-throated hummingbirds are solitary. Adults of this species typically only come into contact for the purpose of mating, and both males and females of any age aggressively defend feeding locations within their territory. The aggressiveness becomes most pronounced in late summer to early fall as they fatten up for migration. This is important because, as part of their migration, they fly non-stop across the Gulf of Mexico, a distance of at least 500 miles. They feed frequently while active during the day and when temperatures drop, particularly on cold nights, they may conserve energy by entering hypothermic torpor. Due to their small size, they are vulnerable to insect-eating birds and animals. Hummingbirds have many skeletal and flight muscle adaptations which allow the bird great agility in flight. Muscles make up 25-30% of their body weight, and they have long, blade-like wings that, unlike the wings of other birds, connect to the body only from the shoulder joint. This adaptation allows the wing to rotate almost 180°, enabling the bird to fly not only forward but also straight up and down, sideways, and backwards, and to hover in front of flowers as it feeds on nectar and insects. During hovering, ruby-throated hummingbird wings beat 55x/s, 61x/s when moving backwards, and at least 75x/s when moving forward. / —-—-—-—-—-—-—- / Bird Gallery / ADD RENEE TO YOUR WATCHLIST

  • This trumpeter swan stretched its wings while its mate (hidden in tall grass) preened. The trumpeter swan is a majestic bird, with snowy white feathers; jet-black bill, feet, and legs; and an 8-foot wingspan. At close range, a thin orange-red line can be seen on the lower part of the bill. Trumpeter swans establish life-long mates at approximately 3 years of age and nest the following year. Sometime between late March and early May, they build their nests, choosing locations close to water. Today, the central Alaska population winters from southeastern Alaska along coastal British Columbia south to the mouth of the Columbia River on the southern border of Washington State. Nikon D200 and Nikkor 70-300mm, 270mm, at f/9 and 1/640 sec, -0.3ev, IS0 200. Converted from 12-bit RAW to jpeg using Capture NX 2.1, manual exposure, spot metering, Manfrotto tripod.

  • It was a little frosty out there today as you can see by the ice on the tree. Birds are such amazing creatures. Canon 40D 70-300mm lens.
