I’ve been looking around on redbubble and I’m starting to think I might have become obsessed with the site, I love to see what everyone else produces and I was blown away with a lot of the photos of different places in Australia… all of you are making me want to go there just so I can have wonderful images like yours. The amazing colors in all of your shots astound me! The reason I am writing a blog now is because I wanted to know what other people think as to what makes a good photograph? What are certain things that pull you in to the photo? What attracted you in the first place… What do you like most about black and whites? and what are somethings that you would like to see more of? I have this aching feeling of wanting to go out and shoot something… I guess I’ve just become inspired by all of you! (This site really is wonderful!) Any suggestions to help a fellow photographer to improve are more than welcomed and appreciated. Thank you!

I awoke this morning to find my beloved PC wouldn’t start properly. I could smell smoke and so opened the case to see various glowing orange spots on my motherboard which were smoking. I nearly cried. Everything I do is with my PC. All my photos, all my work and applications. Wasn’t I lucky to have backed all my stuff up last night? Call it luck but had I not done so I would have lost 3000+ photos and 3 years of work. Its really not worth “Not-doing” So if you don’t back up regularly then please try to do so as you do not want to go through what I have done today. It could possibly spell the end of your photographic world.

So I ask a professional photographer for advice on how to get a step further in the photographing world, and how I could possibly reach my dream of photographing people for magazines, posters or album covers… / His reply merely slated my work, smashed my dreams, added to my insecurities and was really arrogant… Let me add you to my list of absolute pricks, maybe we’ll speak again. / Cheers Robert Lots of love, Craig

I recently read on someone’s profile something about how their talent was growing from being on the site and it got me to thinking about “talent”. For many years now I have been thinking about talent and wondering if I would ever find mine. I am not musically gifted, I love to sing but have NO idea how to sing in key, I can’t draw even a stick figure straight, I suck at crafts, etc…. So, I thought about what I was good at, and all I could come up with is making people laugh and trying to make them happy. Again though, I don’t think thats a talent, its just my personality, right? So what about photography, is that a talent? Anyone can learn to use a camera and take a picture, and the quality of a camera will make a difference in the quality of an image. There are many of you on redbubble that have cameras far superior to my point and shoot, but that wouldn’t mean more talent, that would mean more money for a better camera and therefore better quality of work. Now, that would be where WHAT you are capturing comes into play, is that where the talent lies? I have often read about people having an “eye” for photography. Do you have that “eye”, do I? At one point I might have said I do, but then I think about all of the inspiration I gain from what I see here on redbubble and in other places and I wonder if that isn’t where my “eye” for photography comes from. So, that wouldn’t be talent, it would be growth and knowledge, right? Do you consider yourself a talented photographer? If photography isn’t your talent, do you know what is? Please let me know as I am curious as to how people think on this subject. Thanks for your time! Darlene

I just had to blog about this, especially since it is a marvel of RB promotion. What better guerilla marketing do you know other than giving stickers to RB members and allowing them to stick them on random objects and then take pictures to post on RB… check out the latest Right Brain sabotage.

Some of my favorite and best pictures like my Green Eyed Giza Girl have disappeared from my art at Redbubble. All of my earlier entries which were some of my best have disappeared. Is there a limit of 25 pages of art on Redbubble and who decides which photos to eliminate? I spent hours loading them and setting them up and now they are gone. Can anyone explain?????? It has taken the wind out of my sails. Thanks clizzio

I am thinking of putting together a book showing the best of our Urban Wildlife Group in time for Christmas. The people I will use to publish the book would be Blurb.com who have software that allows one to design a very professional looking book including a dust jacket with inner flaps. Their pages also allow for text so one can make anything from a coffee table extravaganza to a recipe book. In order to do this, I would invite members to submit work that they consider worthy and I would also invite members whose work I admire who may have missed these notifications. For work submitted, I propose using a ‘Challenge’. It would be called the ‘Book Challenge’ and will allow you to submit one photograph of your best work. This would not be a challenge in the true sense, but would be a place to initially start gathering work for consideration. Other work would have to be submitted by email if you think it is worthy. All published photographers would have a full credit so we also need to know your real name, not your nickname! All those submitting work whether it be by invite or via the challenge, would also have to send me their images by email. Images must be of the highest quality and I would recommend sending full size images where possible. An accompanying text must also be sent with the submission. Basically this should say what the creature is and where it was photographed. Locations must not be vague, we will have a global audience as usual so ‘my back yard’ will not do, it tells us nothing. ‘My back yard, Tuscon, Texas, USA is better. The text is very important. One or two condensed but informative paragraphs are ideal telling what we are looking at, where it was photographed and how. Any interesting information about the species may also help, but please use your own words; don’t just ‘lift’ your text from Wikipedia or the like. Urban Wildlife means precisely that. It means the picture must be taken within the confines of a city or town. If it is two miles out from the city perched on a pole or crossing the road it is no longer ‘urban’. I really would like to stick to the strict confines of our group so please only submit pictures that were NOT taken out in the country or wild coast. A park within the city is fine, a park outside the city is not. So to sum up… 1. Your very best work. Jpeg Images only. / 2. Well written and informative accompanying text. / 3. Send you full size image and text (use Notepad to create a .txt file) to info@johnhootonphotography.com / 4, Include the URL of your picture so that I have a quick reference in Urban Wildlife c/o RedBubble. Although Christmas might sound quite a long way away, I have got to select, edit and compile the book by about mid November at the latest, so you can start submitting work straight away. I will limit the works to up to four per person. I think October 31st will be about the last date for submissions. I cannot guarantee that your work will appear in the book, it will be a compilation of the best of the best so there will be a limit on the number of pictures we can publish, however, I encourage you to submit your best work, and will very much welcome your effort whether it is published or not. I will probably plan the book in chapters, so we might have Birds, Insects, Butterflies, Wildlife, Mammals, Reptiles. I will probably skip flowers. We don’t have enough of them and there are stacks of books on flowers that are a subject on their own.. Bear in mind what our group is about. Start digging through your pictures and let’s create a book that we can be really proud of. By the way, books sell for a profit on Blurb and if by some miracle we happen to create a best seller, then profits would be divided up amongst the photographers on a picture by picture basis. The coffers would be reviewed every quarter. Let me know what you think by commenting, and I will attempt to answer any questions and reply here. John
