“Blossoming with Age” Photography & Artwork / by Holly Kempe © Sitting at the foot of the rainforest covered Great Dividing / Range in far north tropical Queensland is the small / rural town of Kennedy well known for its sugarcane and / banana farming. Some of these farms have stayed in a / family for well over a century (a long time in this area’s / short settlement history) and the buildings and farming / machinery left in paddocks attest to their age. / Having to stop my car at a dead end of a dirt track, I / spotted this treasured farm hand in a far off field. Not / wanting to disturb the grazing cattle nearby nor the ire of / the farmer by trespassing on his property, I shot this / photo from my car. As I gazed on the old beast I thought / how completely peaceful and restful it looked in its bed / of blossoming flowers and canopy of tin, free to while / away its aging years at one with nature. “Old age has a great sense of calm and freedom.” / ~ Plato

Taken just before leaving Phillip Island over the Easter break in April 2009. Sunset wasn’t to bad but just as I had ran over from the rocks around the corner I missed the best of the colour by around a minute. Still pretty happy with this one though, hope everyone had a good easter! One of the photos in my Phillip Island series, please click here to see the rest of my images in the series

100% of proceeds received from Redbubble in respect to sales of this item, will be donated to Bush Heritage Australia Photo of a Southern Cassowary taken in the World Heritage listed Daintree Rainforest of north Queensland. / The photo was taken hand held using a high speed sync flash to overcome the very dark conditions. The southern cassowary is one of Australia’s most imposing birds – large, colourful, and flightless. It is found only in the dense tropical rainforests of north-east Queensland. Continuing clearing and fragmentation of rainforest, and increased mortality from cars and dogs have reduced cassowary numbers to perhaps as few as around 2000, threatening the species with extinction.
