  • RAGING MAMMATUS Raging Mammatus clouds moving into my area on Good Friday before Easter. These amazing clouds changed into so many different, brilliant shades as they danced before the setting sun. I am blessed to have actually witnessed such rage and beauty! The Storms Prediction Center (SPC) in Norman, Oklahoma had issued the second TORNADO WATCH of the year for our area in northeastern Kentucky. At first I could not behold my eyes as these beautiful Mammatus clouds began to make their grand entrance in the skies overhead! At first they were a “brilliant” white with silver rings around them, then they changed into hues and shades of gray, silver, blue, pink and purple as they entered before the setting sun. This was the most spectacular sight of Mammatus I have ever seen before; I have hundreds of pictures of Mammatus, but nothing as striking as these in my collections! As a Stormchaser as well as a Photographer, I must add that even a Tornado could not have been as fabulous and exciting as these Raging Mammatus clouds were that very day!! Various pictures of these Mammatus clouds I shot on Good Friday, right before Easter, have been shown on National television here in the USA, and one of them won an international award. A few of these have been selected and placed in several photographic anthologies and distributed world-wide.

  • Sepia Print. Boulder County Lightning Thunderstorm 08.05.09 10:42pm. Lightning stiking above the front range foothills and McIntosh lake. This is a layered image equal to a one minute exposure. Fact: A motor car with a metal top can offer you some protection—but keep your hands from the metal sides. An umbrella can increase your chances of being struck by lightning if it makes you the tallest object in the area. Always avoid being the highest object anywhere—or taking shelter near or under the highest object, including tall trees. Avoid being near a lightning rod or standing near metal objects such as a fence or underground pipes. http://www.TheLightningMan.com
